Manifold failure

So my truck started making a really odd sound, on takeoff. It was like a squeal, or a screech. I brought it to my mechanic, and he knew what it was right away. I had two broken bolts/studs on the drivers side manifold. He had me power-brake it, to put it under load, and it would do the screech. Of course I had to see for myself, so he showed me exactly where they were, underneath the turbo. Sure enough, I could see them after he showed me. The squeal sound, he said was the gasket, whistling like a reed on an instrument.
They pulled the turbo, and there was actually THREE broken studs on the drivers side, and two on the other. So I had them replace both manifolds, gaskets, and all new studs. Supposedly, the newer studs are made out of a better/stronger material. Only time will tell! My truck has been babied by me. I asked him what would cause such a thing, and he said even the mall crawlers that never tow have had the same problem. I follow stuff pretty closely on here, and I've never heard about it on FTE! It wasn't a cheap fix, but I'm good to go now!

Thanks for making the 6.7 crowd aware.

I baby mine and have not heard of this. Wonder if this is something that will become more common as time goes by.

I repaired the same issue on a 2013 with 136k on it. Not sure exactly what causes it but it does happen. It's not a bad repair. The updated studs are longer and they include a longer spacer, I assume to take up some of the stretch from the heat and cold cycles.

I had mine done at 60k with the leak. I think there were 3 broken bolts total. The rear bolts were broke on both sides. The longer bolts and spacers allow more bolt stretch before failure (strain for you engineers out there).

I guess it's a lot more common then we thought! Well I have all new studs, so hopefully that'll be the last of THAT issue.

Had mine done about a year or two ago. My mechanic, at my favorite dealer, also new right away what it was. I had horrible visions I blew something due my tuner but not the case. Just broken manifold bolts, driver side. Had it done in just over a day. He also suggested to replace the oil cooling lines to the turbo since he was that far into the repair. I agreed. Runs, or sounds normal now. Hope it doesn't happen again.

My shop got them from the dealership. I don't believe there is any aftermarket support for them yet.

It was definitely an unknown weak link to me on the 6.7. I am amazed to find out how many others have had it happen, after I made this post. Hopefully, it will help someone else, add it to their troubleshooting checklist if they have a similar problem.
