recently purchased 09 f250 gasser. engine is lunched. i can pull codes (many) but nothing shows on cel. is there some way dealer disabled warning code light. putting in reman engine would like to have it working
The actual CEL lamp could be burned out---most any decent scanner will or should report if the MIL is or should be illuminated. Check that first but no there's no real incentive for a dealer to disable a valuable warning lamp or device.
thanks, didnt think to check bulb. well checked-no bulb. simple solution
I think all cars will do a "lamp test" off all the indicators when the ignition switch is first turned from OFF to RUN.
Easy to miss, I rarely pay attention to all the lights, until one might be missing.
just finished stuffin a reman 5.4 in the old gal. previous owner apparently didnt believe in oil changes. that will ruin an engine. thought id check cel bulb. well black tape on bulb. works fine now

That's pretty damn rotten of somebody. Fairly effective though. Guess required part of purchasing now days is a trip to a shop that has extensive diagnostic capability for a complete OBDII report.
There are DTC Codes for 'MIL Circuit problems' like open / short. (P0650 Mil Control circuit malfunction. P1607 MIL O/P Circuit Malfunction. <Don't know what O/P stands for>) Wouldn't detect black tape though. But there are OTHERS that are invaluable. Grey *Pending' Codes, Number of current codes. Number of Miles driven with MIL ON. Number of Miles driven since MIL cleared.
That last one is one I missed. I test drove my wife's car three times over a week - then bought it. Two days later MIL poped on with "running rich code". I'm convinced dealer was resetting it often to keep it off when customers looked at it. NO WAY it would have stayed off before I bought.
