So, I recently bought an 89 E-150 club wagon and I think it has had a trans swap. It has an AOD 14 bolt pan but I’m almost positive it should have a C6 3speed everything I can find is pointing to it. It has a 302 edition not throttle body injection. Any help helps.
What is the transmission code on the door warranty plate?
what is the shift pattern on the column?
AOD would be PRN(OD)D1
C6 would be PRND21
its possible that someone made a swap, but AOD sounds right for the year. I remember my grandpa having one of this vintage with an AOD, though I don’t remember exactly what year it was. I also remember him having shifting issues until he changed out all the trans fluid. It was very dark and looked like it got very hot more than once.
I mention it because an AOD in that van with a 302 is about at its limit, so some additional cooling and maintenance is probably well warranted.
at least from my experience, YMMV, and others who know more might disagree.
1. The column indicator PRN(OD)D1 is 6 positions, just like PRND2L, so either transmission can shift the same.
2. The door tag can say whatever the car came with, but the actual transmission may not match the door tag.
So it's still possible that you may not have what you think you have by looking at those two clues. You really need to take some measurements on the actual transmission, and check against some references, like these:
So after some measuring and cussing, I am sure it is an AOD in my baby, I am still going to find a C6 and I will mark the vehicle CLEARLY in case I ever decide to let someone else buy it thank you all so much I’m sure my problems are far from over but if it was easy everyone would do it
Something wrong with the AOD, other than it's an AOD? More gears and lockup, depending on your axle ratio that's always handy with a 302. Just a thought.....
Mike, he suspected a trans swap, which is why he's checking. I'm just saying the only way to be sure is to look at the transmission itself, not the door tag, or the shift indicator, which will only tell you what the car came with.
But after measuring the transmission, he's confirmed it's an AOD (no swap).
I also wonder, why the preference for a C6 over the AOD, given the OD, and the locking torque converter.

The intended result of mixing and matching parts would be a 4x4 van without overdrive I am living in the northeast and need to reach not so easily accessible areas for the work I do. The old girl more than likely won’t go faster than 55 for the rest of her years. All of the help is much appreciated thank you.

4WD Econolines were aftermarket conversions by Quadravan, Pathfinder, etc.
F150 4WD was not available with AOD, neither were Bronco's, so I doubt there were any Econoline 4WD conversions with AOD
