30 k service

So my dealer says i need a 30 k service
ok fine. They want 550.00 bucks to do this
on my 17 6.2 . The items i question are ethanol treatment? Moa- oil additive? Fuel injector cleaning.throttle body cleaning. Exchange trans fluid via a special machine.
the trans i get but with a machine?? The rest seems like open wallet surgery.
i can replace my own cabin air filter and engine air filter. I have always had the dealer do my oil changes and rotate tires.
i want to keep my truck serviced but i ask for input regarding some of the things i listed .
please is all that really needed??

IMO all but the but the trans is bull and even that is crazy early. Flushing with a machine is pretty normal now as the convertor is not drainable. Check the manual for the transmission service interval

For the transmission flush, it is probably just a suction pump. I have heard that some of the 6R140's actually have a drain plug. I have not heard that the 6R100's do, so changing the transmission fluid is difficult. Either pull a line to the cooler, drop the pan, or suck it out through the fill dipstick tube. (and some don't even have that).

After reading that some do and some don't, I was pleasantly surprised to find that my 6R100 has a transmission drain plug. My F250 is a 17, built in March or April of that year.

The maintenance schedule doesn’t call for any of that at 30k. If it were me, I’d just stick to Ford’s schedule and tell the dealer exactly what I want done and what I don’t want done!

FWIW, I just hit 30k on mine last week. Changed the oil &filter, air filter, lubed the front axle u-joints and checked the other fluid levels. All were fine.

Look in the owner's manual for the maintenance schedule. I follow it, not some guy trying to maximize the service department profit. Some of the things I do myself to save some money, like changing the fuel, air and cabin filters. I keep the receipts and post the date and mileage I did the change. Anytime I take my truck or the wife's Subaru in for service I check the owner's manual to see what is actually needed so I'm prepared when the upsell pressure starts. The Subaru service has never tried to sell me anything but what the book says, the Ford dealer I have to be prepared.

My dealer wanted almost a grand for a 30k mile service. It was a lot of the same stuff mentioned above. I looked up the schedule service -- nothing other than change the oil.....

Just had my 6.7 in for 30K they never touched the transmission, just the filters, oil change, and basic inspection.

Each dealer sets "their" 30, 60, 90 etc K services. If you called around, you'd find similarities but they'd all be different. Absolutely follow the schedule in the maintenance guide. Consider the conditions you normally drive in, how often you tow, and so forth to decide on the regular or severe duty schedule. Cleaning a throttle body and injectors actually can be beneficial, but probably not at all needed at 30k. Many repair facilities will recommend a transmission service or flush at 30, 60 and 90K but often the scheduled time is well over 100k for the first service. Again, check your guide for timing.

One thing to remember...fluid replacements, trans, oil, coolant, brake, can be a problem if not replaced when needed. But you'll never harm your truck by changing them too soon.

Thanks

Thanks all thats about what i thought . I asked if this was vehicle specific or per the 17 6.2 maint schedule and did not get a reply.
sort of side stepped my question. I dont think most service advisors know these heavy trucks very well.

Per my request, my dealer dropped the Transmission Pan, changed the Transmission Filter and topped it off with new Oil. They changed the Cabin Filter, Air & Fuel Filters and an Oil Change, did a Coolant test, lubed the door hinges, Brake inspection and rotated the tires. All for $550.

According to the OM, the 2017 6.2’s 30K service is a combination of the 7.5K, the 15K, and the 30K service items. It consists of changing the engine oil and filter, rotating the tires, inspecting several items, and changing the cabin- and engine air filters.

As stated, you can change the air filters yourself.

Ford (2017 OM page 329) recommends against using oil additives:

Do not use supplemental engine oil additives because they are unnecessary and could lead to engine damage that may not be covered by the vehicle Warranty.

The normal service interval for the ATF and filter is supposed to be 150K miles.

HTH,
Jim / crewzer

Your owners manual is your best bet for the correct maintenance schedule to follow. I consider the 6.2 platform to be generally very low maintenance with most 'regular' maintenance items being easily performed by me in my own garage. Most major items don't need serving until 60k for severe service and 100k miles plus for normal use. There is a time component in lieu of miles to pay attention to as well. Save your money or spend in on a new accessory for the truck.....just my 2 cents.

The service advisors usually know them pretty well, but it's in their financial interest to sell "un"scheduled maintenance. They don't create the 30k package, but they are expected to sell them. LOL

I agree with @NWnative , save the money and use it to buy something cool like one of these hideous bumpers! The dealer won’t be able to get the hood open so you won’t have to worry about them performing any extra work!
