7.3l idi Growl between 1100 and 1400 RPM and white smoke

I'm getting a growling sound from the engine in my 1992 7.3l idi. It started a couple weeks ago. It isn't there at idle or above about 1400 RPM. Everything else sounds normal. Its almost like something is vibrating too much. It doesn't matter if the engine is warm or not. I replaced the IP about 2 months ago but didn't change the injectors. I just changed the glowplugs to motocraft ZD-9. Its also been having longer crank times almost like air intrusion except I changed the return lines and caps and it never did it before the pump rebuild. Always started right up even in the cold with the weak pump. It has been showing some white smoke at startup too even when not cold. Never used to except a little in the winter at cold start. Pulling a steep hill the other day it was also blowing white smoke. Used to be just a little black smoke depending on how much I used the throttle. I'd appreciate any help.

Thank You,

how many miles on it? it sounds like you have a tired injector or two.

The body has 350,000mi but the engine has about 50,000. They just swapped the pump evidently because it was in need of a pump rebuild. Maybe they swapped injectors too. I have noticed the smoke has been getting worse over the last month. Could the new pump be tiring the old injectors more? Also, what are the best injectors? I'd like to get quality.

most folks Replace Injectors when they replace a pump or at least tested at a pump change.

but I sure find it strange that a pump and injectors fail at 50 K.... while it is possible.

you said You changed the pump and not the injectors .... now you say They Changed IP and maybe changed injectors .. see I'm now ?

But I have seen bad rebuilds on both Pumps and injectors.... maybe you should do a compression test to see where the engine is at ?

EDIT: BTW does it have a turbo.. they are known to Growl .... timing may be off too.. especially if the IP bolts were loose... you could measure the temperature of the exhaust runners to see if you have dead cylinder... maybe valve train issues...... I'm just guessing here

Did you have the IP replaced at a shop? If so did they source it, or did you bring them one to install? Be wary of parts store IPs and certain suppliers on-line. Here are two well rated suppliers:

fuel injection injection pump injection pump rebuilding injection pump repair, Conestoga Diesel Injection Fuel Injection and Turbocharger Rebuilding. The Moose Pump people! Willow Street, PA Home

Sorry, I wasn't too clear on the last post. I think they moved an old pump and injectors to the new engine. But that's just speculation. I had the pump rebuilt by a shop in Spokane WA that has pretty good reviews so I'm pretty sure its a good rebuild. They said they did a total rebuild and did the necessary upgrades. I should have done the injectors too but foolishly tried to save some money. I put the pump in but had it timed at a shop afterwards. It isn't a turbo. The IP is a Stanadyne pump. Not an aftermarket pump. Thank you for the links. Looks like R&D's injectors are out of stock. I do want to get quality parts. Maybe starting with injectors would be the thing to do?

We've all been there. I replaced the injectors in my 6.9l with NEW ones I bought at the parts store. They've done an ok job. I need to eventually replace my IP. When I do I will order from one of the suppliers I linked above.

It sure acts like i may have air intrusion too. Going to have to try to track that down. But it definitely feels like I need new injectors. Is there any harm in running these until i get around to changing them?

Well, I do a lot of driving so I'd better get them replaced. It looks like R&D's injectors are out of stock. What are the best ones to use?

I've heard the gent that runs R&D sometimes has waiting lists for his parts. If you want to buy his parts it's worth while to get ahold of him to see what his turn around time is on a set of injectors.

it also helps to have a set of injectors from a junkyard to send him to build while you wait.

Thanks for the information. I did end up calling him and hopefully I can get a set in the not too far distant future. That hopefully will get the fuel economy back and help with the hard starting.

you can also get new injectors from Aliexpress for like 27 bux each Free shipping but need to wait on the slow boat
Most the folks that rebuild them get the repair parts from China anyway.

Lonewolf, were these the injectors you thought of?

I've never ordered from Aliexpress before. Is it a reputable site? I guess if you know what you're getting into it's an option.
