Question Dashboard lights

I'm looking for info on how to change burnt out dashboard lights.

94 Ranger XL
2 WD
4 cyl
Stick
100,000 +

I sure don't want to pay someone big bucks to swap out a couple of tiny bulbs, but i'm driving in the dark here.

Hello P'u;
Welcome to the FTE Family! 1st If all of you dash lights are out, check for a blown fuse then your light switch (rotating it clockwise + counter, regulates the internal lighting system) Then...For the bulbs that you can't reach from under the dash, you'll have to remove the Instrument Panel to get at the Cluster Assembly. It's description is a lengthy process (as per my Haynes repair manual). It consists of unsnaping trim panels + removing 4 screws. To remove the bulb from their sockets, a 1/4 turn counterclockwise will do it!

COME - BACK!

Getting a repair manual will assist you in your future endeavors!

Thumbs up Repair manual...

..yeah, that's how i ended up here. No repair manual, was looking for one but only found this.

So is this a BIG deal? ..trying to replace these tiny little bulbs? No, it's not the fuse, they've gone out one by one, it's the bulbs. How much time and struggle do i need to set aside to do this? ..once i get a manual.

Thanx for the help.

it's easy

It really isn't that hard to replace them. I have a '99, and here's the steps you need to take (remembering the best I can):

1. Unscrew hood release bracket and let hang down
2. Unscrew lower torx screws holding plastic "knee" panel on
3. Unscrew 2 screws below radio that holds black plastic trim piece on
4. Unscrew screws above gauge cluster that hold main panel on
5. Unscrew all other screws holding main panel secure
6. Don't disconnect headlight switch, just pull main panel aside the best you can
7. Unscrew screws holding gauge cluster in
8. Disconnect the 2 or 3 harnesses attached to the back (each harness is made only to go into proper spot, don't worry)
9. Like he said above, just give the black or beige (different on different years) plastic ***** on back of cluster a 1/4 turn and they should come out.
10. Test by reconnecting harnesses to cluster and turning lights on before you screw everything back together.
11. If it works, put everything back the way it was, and you're ready to roll! No more annoying dimness on your gauges, either.

Thanks

Glad to be a member! I'm a Ranger nut. I had a '96 XLT 2wd flareside with the factory sport suspension tricked out, and now I'm working on souping up my '99 XLT Sport 2wd flareside. I love these trucks-dependable, economical, and not too shabby on style points, either. Now if someone could just help me with my tire wear problem- see the post.

Talking Grateful for the help

Thanx! Both of you.

I'm glad i asked.

now... is there an existing post regarding the "check engine" light? Mines been on for a while. At first i thought it was just because i'd passed that 100,000 mark, because i couldn't FEEL a problem, but the thing is not going off. I'm thinkin i better do something. Cuz i DO love that little truck...

Hi P'u;
If you have any kind of question, always ask for an answer! People don't realize that unanswered questions dwell in the mind + create interferance in our daily lives! I'm still work'in on a resolution for my CEL (check engine light) being intermittantly lit!
If it wasn't for all the rust, these would be great little trucks! (when you get to work'in on em' and see rust everywhere
you really wonder about the old saying: "Ford has a better Idea").

COME - BACK!

Getting a repair manual will assist you in your future endeavors!

Rust? I've got no rust. my little ride looks good for her age. a few crows feet but nothing major. No rust!

Yeah, well i liked it better when engines were only mechanical.
One station talked me into letting them hook her up to their diagnostic machine for that CEL ($79. JUST to look) and after jerking me around for a week, told me they were "uncomfortable" doing the work. In other words the guy was clueless. sigh...

Welcome to FTE!

If your CEL is on you need to have your truck's computer scanned for diagnostic trouble codes. Many auto parts stores such as AutoZone will do this service for free.

After you get the code numbers, post them here and then we can help you resolve them.
