Tire Wear
unfortunately Fords alignment “specs” are not really specs. I say this bc the specs are so wide. Acceptable caster(in ford spec) ranges from +2.7- +5.0. Thats a large tolerance.
A Super Duty alignment can be “within spec” and drive like crap and chew thru a set of tires in 15,000 miles. Ford dealer will say, “its within spec”. Means literally nothing. If the toe, camber, & caster are all towards the ends of the specs, then its not aligned. Its acceptable to Ford. Which is not great since Ford doesn't drive the truck nor do they pay for our tires.
my 18 DRW 4x4 PS drove horrible when i purchased it new. Took it to Ford for an alignment and they made it worse. But it was “within spec”
. Took it to another Ford dealer. They threw it on the rack and everything lit up green on the machine screen. They handed it back to me. Still drives like crap and chewing the outer edges of the steer tires to hell and back plus it wandered all over the road. Getting blown off roads from honda civics driving next to me. Fun. Took it to an independent alignment shop. Guy tells me the Toe is dead on but the camber on one side was off and the caster was even on both sides at +3.7. Guy thru in a camber/caster bushing to fix the camber and increase caster on the the passenger front to +4.0 to help fight road crown.
What do ya know, it drives straight now and the tires quit wearing on the outer edges.
When your Ford dealer says its “within spec”, all they are really telling you is, your truck has wheels on the front.
Anyone could assemble a SDuty front suspension and eyeball it within Fords alignment specs. Its a joke.
i run my front tires between 60-65psi towing or not. After a real alignment from the independent alignment shop, the outer edge wearing stopped even with running the tires at %20 below the recommended tire pressure. If a tire is scrubbing(not rolling square)air pressure means nothing.
If a tire is wearing unevenly & theres nothing wrong with the tire, the alignment is off. But on the bright side, your within spec
Anyway, talking about alignment specs. My old Dodge 2500 was like that too. Level the front and set the caster to max spec. Real big range.
