Howdy all. So temps have recently dropped to the 20s in the morning, and have noticed a new issue today. Driving to work this morning I noticed the truck pulling to the right almost hard enough to turn a corner. Last night when I shut er down, all was good. The thing is that after driving 5 miles or so, the problem minimized to almost no pull at all(though it did still favor the right). Wheel bearings are 2 months old so I doubt they are the problem, buy am gonna check anyway. Is this something the steering box will do if going out? Mabey fluid is too heavy? I am using Lucas power steering stop leak right now to try and stop a small leak in box, and it is as heavy as diff lube. If not heavier. Will this , combined with cold temps be a problem? The pump made a little groaning on startup this morning, like it was empty, but only for about 2 seconds. What's the deal with the right turns all of a sudden?
Have you checked your tire pressures? If one tire is lower, it could cause a noticeable pull when cold, but after heating up a bit from road friction maybe it becomes less noticeable.
Tire pressures are fine, as are all linkages. Its definitely either the steering box, or pump. This morning when I started the truck it started slowly turning the steering wheel to the right all my itself. It slowly crept to about 3/4 of the way to full right then stopped. Centering the wheel was not difficult, but just slowly turned back to right. Once temp gauge reads 190 it will start getting better, and after 5 mins it will hold a very straight line. I can let go of wheel for at least a quarter mile without even touching hwy stripes
Do you have an inline power steering filter installed somewhere? If so, check to see if it's plugged up? It sounds like the fluid is having resistance somewhere pushing into the steering box causing the wheel to move. Have you tried draining the entire system and then filling and completing the bleeding techniques provided on here? Maybe there's air in the system somewhere..definitely odd what you're experiencing with it cold and then being fine when warmed up
It is strange. I have searched google for days, and cant find a similar problem on any car, new or old. I dont see any kind of filter, and havent tried to flush. I flushed about 4 months ago due to foamy fluid in pump, and severely leaking box. It was leaking all around that cover on the top with the 2 big bolts on it. Just a curtain of fluid pouring from all around that, but now have it down to a drip an hour or so. It is also wet at all times where the steering shaft enters the box, so should probably pick another up before it gets any colder. Am gonna try some normal fluid today though to rule out the Lucas being too thick. At 4 am it's been 12-20 farenheit, and that fluid is like taffy. I can string a drop of it in the breeze for like 10 feet before it breaks
