I've been noticing some rough running when the truck is cold. In doing some research and talking with other folks, I think I have a "stiction" issue. I was advised that when I change the oil next, use 5W40. I like Rotella and I was just wondering if anybody had any experience or insight. I am also using the Archoil oil additive.

Thanks,
‘I’ve switched from Rotella to Triax 5w/40 for about 2 years, truck likes it better than the Rotella. Starts better, idles smoother too, but you have to plan ahead, I buy it off EBay or Amazon depending on who has the best price. Definitely use the Archoil make sure you use it full strength though.
You must have it piled up! That’s more expensive than Royal Purple. Just yanking your chain. I’m going to go with the Rotella t6 first and then maybe upgrade. Thanks for the input
So the European version? Do you go like 7500 miles and then change the filter and then the next 7500 miles, do the whole change again?

‘If you’re referring to the Triax 5w/40 it comes out to $21.19/ gallon, no tax and free shipping on EBay right now. I don’t see a problem with that price. Good luck with the Rotella.
I first say $12.50 a qt X 15 is $187.50. That was the first thing I saw. I've got 235,000 miles on my truck. You think I'll get great results?
Thank you again,

‘Hey John, I can’t find the post now on EBay, here’s a link to 5w/40 on Amazon. Every truck is different but I’ve heard no complaints from the guys with 7.3L.
Triax Fleet Supreme ESP 5W-40 - Full Synthetic - Friction Modified - CK-4 Heavy Duty Diesel Engine Oil - with CRP Moly Plating Technology. 80K Miles Drain Intervals, (5 GAL Pail)
Does it really have an 80,000 drain interval? When I used Royal Purple 15W40, I would go 7,500 miles, change the filter, and they go another 7500 miles and change the oil and filter. at 15,000 miles. Is that what you do?

‘No, that interval is for Big rigs with huge sumps. I typically do 5K -7K regardless of what Blackstone says unless I’ve worked the truck exceptionally hard. My POV is oil is cheap, I also use a Donaldson blue oil filter.

I see you are now running the Triax oil. I was intrigued by it when I first saw it as well. I ordered a pail for the semi synthetic
from Amazon that I haven't used yet. I found a great deal locally on three of Motorcraft's 6 gallon "Bag in a box" 10w30. I got them for 50 dollars each. I keep the Triax and the Motorcraft oil in the basement at a constant temperature. I've heard that keeping oil in a unheated garage will affect the longevity. Who knows? This current oil change I have the appropriate amount of LubeGard's
in the MC 10w30. This is the first time I've run it. I now have my oil analyzed so I wanted to see if the LubeGard will help the oil additive levels stay higher as per the analysis. Per LubeGard, it's supposed to add 30% more life and reduce friction as Archoil does. From the LubeGard description on the Amazon page:
LUBEGARD HEAVY DUTY ENGINE PROTECTANT contains Liquid Wax Ester (LXE) Technology, specifically formulated to minimize friction and wear — keeping the oil cooler in today’s more complex engines. All modern engine oils contain a highly refined petroleum or synthetic base oil which is fortified with additives to meet motor oil performance specifications. Even so, dated specifications may not represent the level of performance needed by a new engine design. A new oil may not contain sufficient additives such as ANTI-WEAR agents or ANTI-CORROSION compounds even though it passes all the tests. Furthermore, these protective compounds are depleted when the oil is in service. The solution to this protection gap is LUBEGARD Heavy Duty ENGINE PROTECTANT which supplements and enhances the effectiveness of the additive system already present in the oil. LUBEGARD replaces the depleted or insufficient additives and adds LXE wear protectors and friction reducers which are unavailable in any oil. Minimum friction means maximum mileage; minimum wear means maximum service. In addition, LUBEGARD increases the thermal and oxidative stability of motor oil to prevent creation of sludge and deposits. There is a need for improved oil additives for protection and mileage in view of the rapid technological changes in modern engine design. LUBEGARD provides a concentrated package that fulfills these deficiencies (without adding ZDDP, chlorine, inappropriate sludge-building additives, or solid lubricants such as Teflon, graphite, or molybdenum disulphide.) LUBEGARD with LXE Technology will carry your engine through to the future! DIRECTIONS FOR USE: Apply 3 ounces (88.7 ml) to each quart (946 ml) of motor oil. For best results use with every oil change.
I'm not going past the OLMs notification to change the oil, I'm just curious as all hell if it indeed keeps the additive levels higher than past UOAs have shown. We shall see if this stuff does what they claim.
Posting up for FYI and not an endorsement.
Also, Triax makes it's own oil booster. But I haven't seen it for sale anywhere yet.
Don't guess what your oil is doing, get an oil analysis. Below is one such facility. The kit is $15 which includes a sample draw hose, small jar and padded shipping return envelope. No additional cost... Return shipping included. You'll get expert advise and a thorough analysis (Phone and email PDF). Also, periodic tests can show trends.
The analysis will show you how your motor is doing and how your oil is doing. I get the kit at TransWest ((719) 533-1005) but you may have other places that sell the kits in your area.

Appreciate the information as I'll assume you are referring to me. I have had my oil analyzed at Blackstone Labs three times. This next time, I just want to see what I stated above. I do have extra oil from each change. Do these guys do particle counts as I am interested in getting the left over oil possibly analyzed to see if the bypass has any effect on that? Thanks.
