I have an 88 F150 xlt Lariat with the 300 6 cylinder and the 5 speed transmission. I want to change to the 4spd AOD. I have found an automatic column to fit my truck. What else do I need to go with the tranny swap? Which AOD Ford transmission will bolt to my engine. The motor has 185,000 on it and it doesn't miss a beat. I pull a 6x12x6.5 enclosed trailer daily. Any Info appreciated.
You'll need an E4OD tranny NOT an AOD, possibly a new crossmember and driveshaft (I don't know if these pieces are universal or not), a PCM and powertrain wiring harness from the same year truck as yours for an automatic tranny, an A/T radiator and some misc. small stuff.
Why can't he use the AOD? It does not require computer control, it is purely mechanical. Unless it won't "bolt up" to the 300 L6? Didn't they come from the factory with the AOD?

This sound's great, but I only stated AOD in my original message because it was abbreviated for Automatic Over Drive. I thought I had an automatic column but it was in a custom P/U so it was a 3sp Automatic and not a 4spd AOD. Has anyone ever used a Floor shifter from an Aerostar van for this conversion?
I'm pretty sure Ford never used the AOD behind a 300; I know they never used an AOD-E/4R70W with either the 300 or the 351. The AOD will fit but it just isn't up to the torque, although the most recent ones are much stronger. If you wanted to modify one then maybe, but the E4OD is a better box anyway. See http://www.baumannengineering.com/ for info on Ford automatics and http://www.artcarr.com/ for info on the AOD
I have seen trucks in the yards, with the aod factory from like 82 and up with the 300.
I want to do the same swap to my truck, but use a mustang trans instead! And use the truck shift mechanism. Any clues on how hard these swaps are? My left leg is starting to get stronger than my right one.

Unless you've got to have the overdrive, putting in a c-6 is your cheapest option. Much stronger than the AOD, and none of the electronics to worry about like with the E4OD.
Hi guys, a few of the mustang people I have talked to have put the AOD in old mustangs 65-73 and they had to change the yoke, crossmember and trns lines (cooling) but have hooked them up on a stock shifter it just won't go into 1st manually only goes automatic but works fine betters the mileage and drops the rpms I say go for it it cant be worse then going in an old mustang.
