I have a 1985 f250 when someone was replacing the altanator yesterday they put they shorted the altanator out by putting the wrong wire on the wrong terminal and the thing mounted to the passenger side fender/fire wall started smoking on the front lug where the big battery cable connects any ideas would be appreciated
OK probably the easiest way for you to test the Alt and Regulator is take them to Autozone and have them bench test them.. they will do it for Free. it don't have to be autozone it can be any parts or electric shop that will do free testing.
test you fuse links just like you would a regular Fuse with your Multimeter set to Continuity or Low Ohms scale with the Batteries Disconnected.
you can often do the "Stretch Test" on a fuse link too ....if the conductor inside the insulation is burnt, it will stretch at the point of failure.
as far as the large cable if it is Fried then replace it .. IF the terminal ends are not good as in burned then Replace the ends .. your choice here... what I'm saying is Inspect visually for signs of burnt connectors where they connect to the wires.
All those Fuse links on the Relay that is mounted to the fender well is what Feeds Power to the Ignition switch and other things in the Cab.
I assume the wires on this is what you are looking at... as it is a good place to start .. those 4 wires on the RH stud are fuse links and you need 12 Volts on that terminal at all times. that is the Main Power distribution for your truck
BTW check all the small Frame Grounds that go from the Batteries to the fender wells and or Radiator Support .... they sometimes fry too when an Ah Chit Moment happens.
