Very difficult to find for a 99 expedition. I purchased one on line from advance auto and I believe I received the one for the 5.4L instead of the 4.6L. Completely different shape, though it still works. Dorman part number 46087. As long as it stays off the manifold and valve cover, I'm fine with it, and it does.
Seems Rockauto has them in stock as well, Dorman 46036 is one. They have pictures of the actual parts so you can choose the one that fits your application

Shape has no effect on the function.
You're right, as long as it stays off the manifold it should be fine.
The main issue with these hoses is they are not reinforced which is not necessary for function since the pressures are low.
The hose will last a lot longer (i.e. cost the manufacturer more) when an oil rated reinforced hose is used.
The plastic connectors will eventually fail from heat, too.
With longer hoses it can be rerouted to provide easier access to the plugs/injectors.
