2020 Chevy 6.6. gas

Was on https://www.tfltruck.com/ watching a tow test for the 2020 3/4 6.6. gas pulling 16k up the Ike Gauntlet. The truck slowed down to 30ish with the gas on the floor. The Chevy had a 3.73 gear and a 6 speed trans which is probably ok in less altitude.
I sure hope the 7.3 performs better pulling 16k. I ordered mine with 4.30 gearset which will be a benefit.

16K is a lot for a gas truck especially pulling that kind of a grade. The 7.3 should perform better but I would expect no walk in the park under those conditions. A 4:30 rear end while generally better for heavier towing may not help much if the RPM's are close to the same going up a grade at a given MPH because the transmission in the 3.73 could be in a lower gear to get close to the same torque multiplication.

So almost 12 minutes. Remember this video? This was 13,500lbs with the classic 6.0L and it did it in just over 10 minutes. Could this old 2017 pull this new 16k at 12 minutes? If so it makes it seems the new engine combo not too appealing.

ThumbsUp, I'm hoping with a Ford 10 speed plus 4.30 gears will make the 7.3 tow better than the Chevy with the same load and climb..
BTW we own a 2020 303RLS.

I wish they could do back to back pulls with identical trailers. Maybe like. 17-19 6.2 with 4.30s against a 2020 6.2 10spd and 4.30s and a 2020 7.3. All with the same 15k trailer.

Both Chevy and Ram seem to tune their transmission to limit sustained high rpm's and it kills there times on the Ike. Ford just let's it rev. There is no reason for the Chevy to be trying to climb that hill at 3000 rpms.

I believe a F350 7.3 4.30 is rated 20,200 for a gooseneck trailer.

Conventional is between 15000 and 20000 depending on axle and gooseneck 16600 to 20700 in a srw configuration.

F250 (GM was a 2500) is 14,700 5W/GN w 3.55s, 18,700 with 4.30s. GM is 16,600 as tested @ TFLTruck as based on gm site.

I think the 3.73 is terrible for gasser towing, especially uphill at high elevation and the large tires that trucks come with nowadays. That's a commuter gear imo. I don't know what the torque curve of the 6.6 is but I was happy with the 7.3 curve which is why I ordered it. Got the 4.30s too. I won't have to tow 15k up the Ike but the 7.3 and 4.30s will suit the smaller hills and 8k trailer we use.

I dont care for gm 3.73s combned with a 6 speed. When they have the 10 will be fine.

Yeah, I am not fond of 3.73. GM should have left well enough alone and still have the 4.10 as the standard diff ratio. I am just researching out the Ford SD offering, especially the new 7.3. I typically run my 2015 Chevy 2500 6.0 in manual mode and not let it go into top gear. Even with the 4.10 ratio. It is better for the rolling hills in my area and cuts out a lot of unecessary shifting which leads to a cooler trans and, surprisingly, better overall fuel economy.

I am interested in the 7.3 gasser and the 10 speed that Ford is bringing out. Still looking at overall specs and capabilities. The 6.6 L8T gasser in the GM line is interesting, and similar in performance, but GM is using a beefed up version of the 6L90 6 spd. That motor really should have a 8, or better, a 10 spd behind it. GM probably has that in mind in the future, but it is not an offering yet.
