Went wheelin at the mounds sat and blew the E40D POS. Need some ideas as to where to begin fixin (aside from the usual ZF swap comments). The tranny was workin fine all wheeling trip at low speeds, and with the skinny pedal mashed through the mud pits. When I went to get back onto pavement it won't go into 3rd or OD. And it slips alot in 2nd. I swamped it good up 6" above the door line for about 20 minutes till I got strapped out, but there was no water in the tranny fluid or oil. I am going to start tearing into her tonight and want some tips as to where to start looking. Thanks all...
Some typical complaints with the E40D are the overdrive C-clip will break, or the torque converter will go out. I would check there first, the E4OD is a fairly good trans. as long as you get the bugs worked out. Also check out shift and build kits for it, they ususally come with all the components to fix the know corks with this tranny.
The tranny is a 97, so it has all the latest ford tricks already done to it. I will check the cooler lines though. I want to avoid a full teardown if possible. So I won't know if the overdrive c-clip is busted or not. I am mainly looking for electrical bug possibillities right now. Thanks.
I'd put my money on what jimandmandy said. I'd pull the Solenoid block harness connector off (passenger side, just above the pan) and dry the solenoid pin block out with a towel, or a hair dryer. If that doesn't do it, look at the condition of the wires on the harness connector. Is the insulation burned off? Replace the connector if the insulation is burned off some or all of the wires, or the locking tabs are broken off the connector. Write me via my "profile" at the bottom and I will send you some E4OD information you might find helpful. R.A.
thanks guys, I took it to a trans shop and had then tear it down for free for me and found out it was a blown second gear clutch assem (burned to toast), and a partially fried 3rd gear too. 120K, she was on her last leg anyway...
