i'm looking to swap my np203 with an np205 from a junkyard. my truck is a stock '76 f150 with a 360, and the 205 came from a '79 f150. i'm wondering if this should be a bolt up swap besides the driveshaft lenghts.
my main question. when i get the 205 from the junkyard, what should i replace? any bearings or gaskets that tend to go out on these things?
final question... the 203 makes noises pretty badly, and the 205 is only $150. is this price ok or could i better convert the 203?
My advice, looking at the similar situation, is make sure you get the trans-to-tcase adapter (203 is shorter and does not have the same shifter boss, I've been told), output shaft, shifter.... anything you think you might need. The driveshaft will have to change, but you indicated you that already. The 205 would be a better alternative than converting the 203--same basic advatanges without the chain drive front output.
Another option you could consider: buy the 205, and get a doubler kit. Most likely, the noise in your 203 is chain-based, or at least in the rear part of the t-case. The doubler uses the gear reduction box of the 203, then bolts the 205 to it, giving you a 3.98:1 low range with both GRB's in low range. With the alternate shifter, you can ever have two low ranges and the option of front, all, or rear wheel drive.
The doubler is an option I'm looking at with great interest. Another bonus is, supposedly, you can use the stock rear driveshaft, and only have to lengthen the front.
thanks for the info. the doubler does sound like a good idea.
one question i have though, is about the adapter: any ideas on cost or where to find the correct one? what should i be looking for
That's the part I forgot to mention. I'm looking about about $1000 between the adapter kit, shifter, and driveshaft mods. Guess it's more useful than spending it on another rifle, though. And I want to make sure both the GRB and the t'case are in perfect condition before I hook them together.
The kit I'm looking at is the ORD Doubler (offroaddesign.com), but it seems there are others available as well.
