Ok looking to get a handicap accessible van for my disabled son. This is available locally, owners state needs rear brake lines. How easy of a job is the line replacement with stainless lines? Also what are common weak spots I should inspect on this Explorer Conversion van.
The typical bad spot is on the line running back from the master cylinder/ABS pump to feed the back. It sits on the frame rail, and salt can sit there and rust it out.
It's not bad, IF you don't care about putting them exactly where the old lines are run. It is in a bundle along with other things, and it would be a lot of work to get it all just like factory. If you want to do it neatly and functionally, but not necessarily factory, it's not bad at all. Look into nicopp, though. It's far easier to work than plain steel, and is more corrosion resistant than stainless. Really, the only reason to use stainless is for show cars where it's going to be polished.
Another common problem is the door latches. It's a poor design. Lots of threads here on it. The good news is, it's an easy fix.
Replacing the water pump can be a real pita. On mine, 4 of the 7 bolts that hold it on broke. I was able to drill out 2 of them and then cut threads on the other 2 that stuck out enough to do so.
I then used a drill to turn down 5/16" hex couplers that extended them enough to accept new bolts.

What motor, year, mileage? Different motors have different issues to check. Make sure the heat and ac work front and rear. Make sure the trans doesn't feel sloppy going into gear and check the fluid color. Rust is the big issue. If the brake lines have rusted then there is probably a bit of rust back there with them.
