I am drawing a blank, my kid is going to go look at a 96 7.3 and he asking me what to look for, I have said
Oil in the valley
Oil cap rest on fill tube, see if it blows off
oil leaking down back of the motor
excessive tappit noise ( injectors)
If it is plugged in, it is 45*, it shouldnt be plugged in unless there are glow plug/injector issues
How fast does the motor rev while starting....should be fairly fast. Indicates good batteries and starter. Overall cleanliness of the engine bay. Check all the fluids. Coolant should be green if maintained with anti-freeze with no signs of oil or fuel in the coolant. Oil should have the viscosity of new oil and not be thick or like sludge. Check for loose wiring, wires not connected to anything, parts missing or broken. How many miles? Standard or automatic? Preferably. you want to start it cold. If there are issues with the glow plugs, this will help to identify them. Is the truck stock or does it have upgraded components? How much experience do you have with the 7.3s? After a number of miles driving them, you can feel if something isn't right with the way one is driving.
Also, I'd ask for documentation of the servicing.....records, receipts, anything of that nature.
