I live in South Dakota and we dropped below freezing for the first time last week. I remote start my truck when the window is frosted over to thaw it out. Anyways I got this code once I jumped in my truck. From what I have researched it looks like the code is for the reductant heater. Which make sense since it happened the same day it dropped below freezing. What does not make sense to me is it seems my truck is in limp mode. I did not notice it until I had to pull out in busy traffic and get on it. Seems like first gear has boost and is normal but from 2nd on it feels like a diesel with no turbo. Confirmed this by the hill I have to go up to get to my house usually my truck stays in 6th with a tiny bit of throttle applied but now it downshifts to 5th almost immediately upon hitting the hill. Just wondering if anyone might have some insight on what I am looking at. I filled my DEF tank and cleared the code, was late so I haven't had a chance to drive it yet. I read somewhere that the reductant heater is a $1200 fix and you might as well delete for that money? Truck is a 2014 with 67K so I think I am out of all warranty.
Edit - This is my only vehicle so I am having to drive it, yesterday with the code I still got the "cleaning exhaust filter" popup and seemed to run through the process.
Had this happen when I first got my 2017, it was a warranty fix but I do believe they threw about 12-1500 in parts at it. Replaced the def heater and pump I do believe. I have 100k miles on it now and sometimes get a p20b code (sensor) but I just reset it and it’s fine.
you can go on ford.com and probably narrow in on recalls by your vin and find out if you are covered. You probably are. My 2013 has the extended warranty for the item.
I would also not just fill the def until it is called for, especially now that freezing temps are in your area.
