Question Identifying 84 Bronco Auto Trans

Hi all.
I'm back with another question :/
I'm trying to find out which transmission i have in my 1984 bronco XLT 4X4.
the door code reads 'R' under transmission. the column shift goes from right to left, P-R-N-D-2-1
the bloke I bought the truck from originally though it was a 351 windsor with a C6... it turns out the Engine is a 351 clevo!

I blew two piston rings and am getting the engine reconditioned. I need a new torque converter for the transmission (upping the engine to 350hp) ... right now the trans & engine are in seperate states and the engine specialist wants to know what trans the torque converter will need to fit on!
how do i check?

thanks in advance

- Sean

probably a c6. Count the pan bolts. 17 is a c6. If you come up with 11 bolts, its a c4 (not likely, but ....). Don't know of any other 3 speed autos used in the 80's.

I don't have R listed anywhere. A C6 should be K. Look around for a ford transmission ID site and you'll find pictures of different pan shapes and bolt counts.

Also, if it's a 351C, it was swapped out. An '84 would definately have a Windsor motor.

that is interesting information about the clevo being swapped in...
when i spoke to my 'mad scientist' engine rebuilder ( www.fordmuscleparts.com.au ) he told me there's nothing you can do to a windsor that you cant do to a clevo. I'm going to get under the truck at the mechanics and count those pan bolts too, thanks for that info.

If it's a Cleveland then possibly it's an FMX? If it's a big ugly cast-iron boat anchor POS, that is.

The 351 Cleveland was not in production in 1984. If it has one it is not the original engine. The only 351 in production then was the Windsor.

Then it IS a Cleveland. The Cleveland was produced in the Australian market for many years after it disappeared in the US.
