I'm trying to clean up some steering play in my 76 F100 w/ manual steering, 2 wheel drive. It has about 55-65 degrees of play before you start actually guiding the wheels.
With the truck parked, I'm able to grab the steering shaft and manually rotate it through all of the 55-65 degrees of play without causing the front wheels to move any.
It seems like the play is divided between the 'normal' play of the steering column flange w/ the rag joint studs and the manual steering box.
So my question is... how much play should be seen from the manual steering box when it's parked and not causing the wheels to move at all? And, if that is a problem, how should I fix that?
Get a helper to turn the wheel back and forth while you start at the base of the column and work your way to the wheels. Probably the simplest and quickest way to figure out the problem(s).
1. 1st I'd replace the rag or flex joint. With a quality one, not the cheapest the parts store carries. Like OEM quality.
2. You should have almost 0% of play on either end of the steering shaft meaning the shaft to box (either end) and shaft at fire wall steering column connection point.
3. If that is all, sound like a good time to look into a new box. NEW and better like a Redhead or Blue Top. With machined internal upgrades.
