Source for REAR driveshaft?

My 85 short bed has the driveshaft with the joints at each end and a slip joint on the transfer case side.

I tried greasing it but it has too much play in the splines...I can find front driveshaft but nobody lists a rear.

Is the only option a rebuilt shaft? Anyone know what something like that would cost?

There must be good junk yards near Pittsburg somewhere.

If you live in or near a large town, there should be a driveline shop somewhere near you. I am assuming you are saying your slip joint is in the driveshaft, not inside the transfer case? If so, the standard procedure is to cut the splined end out, of the shaft and install a new one and weld it in place, and then re-balance the shaft. Standard stuff for a shop with the equipment to do it.

Yes, exactly that...she's wallowed out lol.

I have located a shop that I will call.

The pinion nut was backed off also. I tightened that up while holding the flange from turning. Feels like some play inside so I'm thinking it needs rebuilt or replaced too.

Make sure you tighten that pinion nut pretty tight. If it's noisy after that you are right, you might have a pinion bearing damaged in there.

When the shop repairs the driveshaft, see if they have a rubber boot to go over the slip joint area. If they don't, I have gone to the store and bought one of those colored shock boots, and used it with wire ties to cover the splined area and the slip yoke. Keep the grease in and the dirt and water out, and it will last a long time. The factory did have a boot on it originally.

The play I feel is in the rotation...like it will turn so far and then if you grab it you can turn a bit further before wheels start to spin.

Mot sure if that means bearing or gears are shot, but it doesn't hum...just clunks a bit when changing direction.

Since I've done the rebuilt motor, new clutch and good tranny and transfer case, the driveshaft and rear end are the last on my "must do" list before I start driving it.

If it makes no unusual noises, just a clunk when turning it, that sounds like normal wear. You can drive it a long time like that if you want to postpone going through it till a later time.

I highly recommend Driveline Service in Pittsburgh. Be advised they do not accept credit cards, bring cash!

My neighbor who builds engines recommended a guy in Greensburg to me.

You are not the first one to say that.

We will see how bad it feels after I get a new driveshaft on it.
