I think Ford says about every 100,000 miles. Apparently, there have been people who cut up their tranny filters after 50-100K and found they were still just about good as new.

I say change it anyway when you change the fluid (or every other fuild change). The filter is cheep, especially compard to the cost of 16+ quarts of Mobil1 Synthetic ATF every 30,000 miles.

So I should change the fluid every 30,000?

Yes. Absolutely. That's the manufacturer's specified interval.

just change it when you do the fluid change at 30,000 it is really inexpensive. you dont leave the oil filter when you change the oil do you?the safe way to go, imo

There is a special flush proceedure. If you are not towing I feel 30k is alittle much. Esp with mobil 1..

If you drain the convertor you will get more out but IMO that is a waste of money if you change you fluid often. If you go the distance without a change then I would drain the convertor (there is a bolt on it) but changing often will keep the oil plenty fresh.

Also towing has a lot to do with trans oil, if you tow change it more.

I flushed mine @ about 30,000.Flushed everything, then drained the pan and changed the filter, checked old filter, looked good.I used double amount of fluid but gave me a good piece of mind.Flushing gets all trash out of cooler etc.

On all my vehicles I have owned, I change the tranny fluid/filter every 25,000-30,000 miles.......before I got rid of my last truck, I would changed the ATF every year, reguardless of the miles, just because I drive the truck hard. I have never done those full ATF fluid exchanges, but I bet they are good.

I sold my last truck about 2 years ago with 150,000 miles on it and it has 165,000 hard miles on it, with the original tranny that shifts great. My wifes SUV also gets a yearly ATF/filter change, just because she puts 25,000 miles on her SUV a year. Well worth all the work/time/money.

Kinda mixed messages here, huh?

30K is the interval.

Filter does not need to ever be changed. (Although I did on mine.)

DIY change procedure is found in the FAQ or tech articles. (Written by Ford Transmission Engineer, Mark Kovalsky)

Interval and procedure is the same no matter 4x2 or 4x4.

Not a mixed message at all. Fluid change at 30,000. Filter change (I think) at 100,000.
