V8 vs 3.5 Ecoboost

I'm looking to buy a used or new F150, prefer King Ranch, within the next 3 months. Just getting info on the V8 vs the V6 Ecoboost, pro's / con's, etc. I'm not towing anything heavy, or trying to race anyone. What's your thoughts.

Looking at 2018 up to 2020 F150.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

The all new, and I mean that as it is a completely different engine than 2017 and earlier 5.0s, has had some issues. Are they all bad, no. Someone will post here about it soon.

As has been the case for the last several years, the 3.5 EB has been a solid engine. Just not any real issues being reported on them.

Buy the truck you want and don't worry about the power plant. Any engine will be fine. If you follow the sage advice of many of those that post here, you'll be walking.

With no towing/payload requirements I say drive them both if you haven't already. Buy the one you like.

The 3.5 EB makes peak torque at a much lower 2500 RPM and will pull "like" a diesel in that sense.
The 5.0 likes to rev and peak torque isn't until 4500 RPM. I don't mind opening mine up and letting it sing.

There were also some 5.0s with oil consumption issues. I've been breaking mine in hard and haven't had nearly the consumption that some are experiencing.

Fuel mileage is a wash and will be similar between the mills (and very dependent on your right foot)

Seriously, go drive them. Very different animals. Which ever puts a bigger grin on your face - buy.

They drive very differently, and some people will have a strong preference for the feel of one over the other. Both are plenty strong for your use.

I'm in the "just go test drive both" camp.
As mentioned earlier in this thread, any of the available engines will do fine.

The biggest difference is the 3.5EB makes loads of torque where you normally drive and the 5.0 has a great exhaust note.

In the end, only you can determine which is better for you by doing the test drives....because both are quite powerful.

Drive the 3.3 and 2.7 too. Better mpg's, surprising power. (vs. shocking)

Can’t get either of those in a King Ranch. I just noticed yesterday on the 2020 build and price that you can no longer get the base V6 on an XLT.

It will be shocking if the base v6 makes it through the next F150 update, it has a 12% take rate.

Sad, it’s the perfect fleet engine for pool maintenance, pest control, etc.

Thanks very much, I think I'll test drive both and see. I like the MPG but I also like the sound of the V8. We'll see...

Real world mileage will be very similar on the 3.5EB and 5.0 V8.

If you're really looking for good MPG consider a Lariat with 2.7EB. Lariat is the highest trim available with that engine.

Keep us posted what you decide (and post pics, we like pics)

I just left the 2014 Platinum 4X4 with the 3.5L and don’t think I’ll ever go back to it. I can only speak of the Ecoboost version of the engine with twin turbos. Originally coming out of a F250 and wanting to downsize a bit, I was sold on the “Towing” specs of the 3.5L and no matter what they say, yes it can pull, but it does not have the torque or pull of the diesel like they said it would. Now with this said, I was not pulling commercial trailers, just a heavy 6k boat and I was very disappointed with how it performed.

If your just gonna run around town, then the 3.5L is fine. If you are going to pull, then go 5.0L. In all honesty and I don’t want to upset anyone and start an assault on me for saying this..... but for ME - l had so many issues with my 3.5L that I would not recommend one to anyone and that is why I went to the 5.0L.
