I'm looking to buy a used or new F150, prefer King Ranch, within the next 3 months. Just getting info on the V8 vs the V6 Ecoboost, pro's / con's, etc. I'm not towing anything heavy, or trying to race anyone. What's your thoughts.
The all new, and I mean that as it is a completely different engine than 2017 and earlier 5.0s, has had some issues. Are they all bad, no. Someone will post here about it soon.
As has been the case for the last several years, the 3.5 EB has been a solid engine. Just not any real issues being reported on them.
Buy the truck you want and don't worry about the power plant. Any engine will be fine. If you follow the sage advice of many of those that post here, you'll be walking.
With no towing/payload requirements I say drive them both if you haven't already. Buy the one you like.
The 3.5 EB makes peak torque at a much lower 2500 RPM and will pull "like" a diesel in that sense.
The 5.0 likes to rev and peak torque isn't until 4500 RPM. I don't mind opening mine up and letting it sing.
There were also some 5.0s with oil consumption issues. I've been breaking mine in hard and haven't had nearly the consumption that some are experiencing.
Fuel mileage is a wash and will be similar between the mills (and very dependent on your right foot)
Seriously, go drive them. Very different animals. Which ever puts a bigger grin on your face - buy.
I just left the 2014 Platinum 4X4 with the 3.5L and don’t think I’ll ever go back to it. I can only speak of the Ecoboost version of the engine with twin turbos. Originally coming out of a F250 and wanting to downsize a bit, I was sold on the “Towing” specs of the 3.5L and no matter what they say, yes it can pull, but it does not have the torque or pull of the diesel like they said it would. Now with this said, I was not pulling commercial trailers, just a heavy 6k boat and I was very disappointed with how it performed.
If your just gonna run around town, then the 3.5L is fine. If you are going to pull, then go 5.0L. In all honesty and I don’t want to upset anyone and start an assault on me for saying this..... but for ME - l had so many issues with my 3.5L that I would not recommend one to anyone and that is why I went to the 5.0L.
