I'll bet some jobs will be lost due this strike---possibly more plants to be closed or idled. Sadly I think the UAW is losing its influence over any manufacturer where they were once very strong. Not really sure what's in the best interest of the employees but they seem to believe GM will cave in to their demands---I doubt that for some nagging reason.
if its the same union why isnt Ford having problems?
uaw extended its contracts with Ford and FCA indefinately while it negotiates with GM. They have been negotiating with Ford but GM is the target due to profits, "unallocated plants", and wages.
never should have Bailed out Gov't Motors in the First place IMHO
If that sentiment comes from a dislike of GM's products that's all well and fine BUT the wider-spread economic effects would have impacted the USA's economy. Sure we would have lost another brand name--so what you ak---but what or who would have replaced those jobs? One way or the other the Gov't would have been saddled with absorbing the job loss one way or another.
If there's a problem with GM's bailout it's the lack of holding them accountable for repaying the bailout money. Blame that on those who've not stepped up to get our money back.
We should blame the Treasury for selling the remaining GM stock for a 11.2 billion loss in 2013. The tax payers also lost 1.3 billion due to the Chrysler bailout as well. But the result of not bailing them out was somewhere between 1-2 million jobs.
