Hope someone can help me... I have an older boat with, what I believe to be, a 302 ford with holley 4 barrel carb. After running the boat for a prolonged period at slow rpm's, then when powering up, it sounds like it is not getting enough fuel. I am thinking it is my float settings. Because when I first leave the landing it will run top speed just perfect, but like I said, after a while at slow rpm it will not get up and go. Does any one know the correct starting point for the floats? Or am I off base here?
Well adusting the float would usually be done by removing the sight plug and if a little gas runs out of the hole then your good. If nothing comes out or a lot then adjust accordingly. If it should have nothing come out then turn on the motor, while it is running on top of the carb you will see a nut with what appears to be a flat head screw in it (needle and seat) there are two one in front and one in back. loosen the nut adjust the screw up until you see a little gas start to come out the sight plug (place a rag under the sight plug and be careful it could catch fire but you knew that). Should you need to lower the needle and seat be careful, you turn it too far in and you will not be able to turn it back out, I purchased a truck one time and the thing ran like crap (would die on turns) and come to find out someone had turned it all the way down. Just be sure your motor is fairly level (being it is in a boat on a trailer I will assume). Good luck hope this helps
the only way I would figure it being the float level would be if by power up the front begins to raise maybe throwing the floats off, then again I know nothing about boats. Hope it works out, good luck
