My 51 yr old plus ammeter is starting to bug me a bit. All other wiring and charging system, fuel injection under hood is all new. Can I unplug it and then just put the wires together so it is “ hard wired” ?
When you disconnect the plug, make sure the battery is disconnected first, as it's a single loop of wire between the alternator's BAT post and the battery via the starter relay.
Then inspect the connection closely for rust or deteriorating and clean, or fix if needed. If it does not go back together super tight, take it back apart and see if there is a way to tweak/crimp it a bit to make a tighter connection.
This is the wire that powers literally everything in the truck, and charges the battery. Has to be clean and tight for it all to work right.
Speaking of clean and tight... The two rectangular firewall connectors are major problem areas of Broncos. If nothing else then, while you have the battery disconnected, pull them apart and check them for loose, bent or corroded connections. The large Black charge wire running through the ammeter loop also runs through those connectors. In one and out the other if I'm not mistaken.
Might even do that first, just to see if it has any effect on how the ammeter works.
By the way, what is it doing that bugs you? Oscillating back and forth? Just bouncing around with the vehicle like the spring dampener has broken? Something else?
Everything works ok and charges well. It does bounce back and forth quite a bit. According to my volt meter and also the handheld controller for my EFI the voltage is doing well. Maybe best to leave it alone. Truck stays out and has been out of the weather and lives in the southwest dry area.
