Currently have 16 inch wheels on the truck. I have noticed that Dodge installs 17 inch 265/79R tires on their big pickup.
Has anyone tried this on their Ford and did they notice any gain in carrying capacity and tire mileage?
Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I think the F250's and up, and some of the XLT models of the F150's have 17's - and have for the last few years. I know the Lightning comes with 18's.
The size of your wheel can contribute to some extra gains in performance in towing, etc. - but the largest gain you will see would be from the tire size you select to use.
My 2002 Ranger XLT came with 17 inch wheels. They're the same ones shown in all the pictures of the new F-150. Now, I seem to recall the new F-150 being advertised as totally new from the ground up... so maybe they consider the wheels as not being up from the ground, although technically that would be the tires.
I have 17's on my NASCAR Edition. I bought some BF Goodrich All Terrain T/A's and they wear great. I have had them for a bit over a year and love them. Still almost as much tread as new.
As for hauling, I can't tell you a lot there, because I havent hauled anything heavy enough to make much difference. Hauled about a 1100# palleted load, which scrunched the truck down but the tires looked like they didn't even notice.
A lot depends on what sidewall rating you get, for hauling loads. My truck came with a passenger rated tire and I upgraded to the All Terrain in a size of LT265-70R17.
My 2003 F150 FX4 came with 17 inch wheels. They look nice and fill up the wheel wells much better than a 16 inch wheel. Downsides? well, they reduce towing rating by about 400 pounds and the tires cost more. I still like them.
Not a lot of options for 17" tires either (E rated), I wound up going with 16" rims when I bought, the tire guy said it would probably be another year before there was much to choose from in tires ...
I would like to try some 17" wheels too. I was gonna get the M/T Classic II's in a 17x9. My supplier is just concerned about the backspacing. It has 5" bs w/ a 0.00 offset. He can't be 100% sure it won't rub on the spring at full lock in a 37" PJ. It's a 37x12.5x17. If not, then its a 16x10 in a 4 7/16" bs w/ a -24.4mm offset on a 37x12.5x16. The PJ in the 16x10 has a .5" wider section width. Decisions. Decisions. I've been trying to find anybody runnin a 17x9 M/T II.
