Just found some stuff hanging out of the radiator, looks like some stop leak to be honest. I think the radiator is clogged up. I’m gonna get a new one tomorrow and see if that helps, if not I’m gonna go get a new water pump to.
Go ahead and replace the heater core also. They are about $25. At least install new heater hoses, I paid about $1/foot ... 5/8" sticks in my mind as the correct size.
New radiator hoses would be prudent, I did on mine soon after purchase.
As good as this motor runs, I don’t think anything major has happened to it. For one it doesn’t use any oil or coolant, no blow by, no loss of power at all. Plus if it was over heating because of stop leak (which it shouldn’t) then it would be much worse. The truck all around is to good to be a lemon. Not trying to jinx myself at all. This truck made a 22 hour round trip to Tennessee and back with no issue but the small over heating thing. Also when I run at night it stays a little cooler. I’m pretty sure it’s a radiator.
Ok I’m pretty sure it’s the radiator to be honest. The cooling system isn’t holding the amount of coolant it should be. I can barely get 4 gallons in the system and if I’m not mistaken it’s supposed to hold 6 or 7 gallons. Correct me if I’m wrong. I ordered a brand new full aluminum radiator and a laser thermometer to. I’m going to go ahead and order a water pump anyways cause even if the radiator fixes it I want to go ahead and replace it. Wish me luck and if there are any things I need to know please tell me.
Pull the block heater out when you drain the system to get the last gallon or so out. Flush, flush, and then flush again... And then flush it with the engine running.
When you fill the system, either use prediluted or if you want to save a buck use the concentrate antifreeze diluted with distilled water. Do NOT use tap water... distilled is cheap.
I flushed the radiator 3 times, also when I flushed it the first time it wasn’t rusty at all or even gunky. It was white and chalky looking. The truck has a new water pump on it and I don’t think it’s bad. I ordered a water pump so I have it. When I put the new radiator in it I’ll get some more additive to add to the coolant. I use 50/50 in all of my vehicles. After I get the new radiator in and make sure it doesn’t leak or anything I’m gonna pop the plastic off of the top of my old one and see how many channels were clogged.
Also I noticed that the top and bottom of the radiator are pretty hot. I’ve been told that the bottom should be cooler than the top but it seems it’s pretty hot like the top or is that normal. That’s from me feeling it with my hand anyways.
