1965 NP435 problems

Recently my 1966 f100 wouldn’t shift into gear when the engine was running so I pulled the trans, bell housing, and clutch to find that my pilot bearing was completely destroyed, what could have cause that? I just had my engine rebuilt. I found a little bit of play in my input shaft and I was told I had to change the bearings out but it seems ok, but I noticed the syncho assembly had some play, could that be my problem? Thanks(this is my first trans rebuild)

If the pilot bearing was of the needle type, they tend to do that, they don't hold grease, get dry, and if you hold the clutch down while waiting for lights, the input does a lot of turning in that bearing. If the input bearing is tapered roller, and is good, ad or remove shims to make it tight, and the synch's do have some play.

So the rollers on the tapered bearing seem to not have much movement if any but the metal part that holds them together has a pretty decent amount of play, is that normal? And I concluded that the input shaft friction welded itself to the pilot bearing and that’s why it was hard to shift and everything so I grinded down the metal that welded itself to the shaft with a dremel very carefully and I’m hoping that it should be fine
