New Ex - GPCM Issue?

Hey guys. Finally pulled the trigger on an Excursion last week - a 2002 7.3 4x4 with just over 220,000 miles. Drove great all 300 miles home to Texas and has done well this week ferrying me around as my daily driver. Definitely some things to work on and update but in relatively great shape overall.

On Sunday, I got my first CEL. Ran the code and it's P0683 - the Glow Plug Control Module. I've cleared it a couple times but it's come back each time within a day or so. I went ahead and ordered a new GPCM. Never had an issue starting right up though. I figured since the weather is still very summer-like here in Texas it was a non-issue for the time being.

This morning it didn't want to crank up right away. I'd waited for the WTS light to go out but it wouldn't start. I cycled the key off, waited again for the WTS light to go out and that time it cranked on. Still had the P0683 code. I figured it was the "cold" front we had move in last night (that's cold compared to the mid 90's but not actually cold).

I came out this afternoon to head home and it did even worse than this morning. Wouldn't start. After two cycles trying to get it to start it wouldn't even crank up. Seemed completely dead. Had my wife come get me because I had a football game to get to (again, it's Texas). Came back tonight and checked the batteries. One was 5+ years old. The other is newer but bought two new ones to be safe and put them in. Still nothing. I have a video that I'll try to add to this post.

What do ya'll think. Once I get the GPCM and pop it in there will that solve my issue or am I dealing with something else? Thanks in advance. I cannot tell you how helpful reading this forum was in my purchase process. So informative and a genuinely helpful community.

i suggest getting Forscan so you can monitor all the functions, the DTC is a good indicator but doest necessarily mean the module is bad, could also be the wiring.

but a failed cpcm should not keep it from starting, monitoring the functions during cranking will tell you what the issue is.

one thing Forscan doesnt tell you is fuel pressure so you will want to get a gauge setup for that. typically rebuilding the fuel pressure regulator cures this, i suggest replacing the housing as the threads often fail after you take them apart.

www.dieselorings.com has the parts you want.

I was afraid this was the case. Thanks for the feedback. Hope to get this straightened out early next week.
