When pairing the transfer case back with the transmission is it recommended to use gasket only or should I add some sealant also. 1986 4x4 np435 and np208 t-case.
I always smear a little rtv when I am putting something back together, with or without a gasket. With a gasket you need very little, just a very thin layer smeared around with your finger. I just put a transfer case back on the other day, and didn't use a gasket at all, just rtv. In that case without a gasket I used a bead of rtv to seal it. Hasn't leaked so far.
Didn't think you wanted a true "seal" there anyway...… The output shaft of the tranny is sealed.
The input shaft of the T-case is sealed.
There should be NO fluid in this cavity, and how would you know of a leak issue if it is "sealed tight?"
This is where you get the questions where did the fluid go, the T-case was empty, but no leaks...
Thought the paper gasket just makes for an easy break apart, from the cases corroding..

I can't remember what the ZF looked like in my f250, but I just replace the trans and transfer case in my ranger, and the transmission is wide open to that adapter area between the transmission and transfer case. The transfer case has a seal to keep the auto trans fluid in it, but I had the shifter out and could look right up through the adapter to where the shifter was located, and on down inside the manual transmission. So in this case, gear oil is going to be present in the adapter area.
