A little while back, I pulled my 300 and T18 transmission out of my 78 F250. I installed new front engine mounts when I reinstalled the engine and tranny, and since then, the engine has been tilted a little back toward the cab. As a result, the tip of the fan blade is catching the upper radiator hose and spewing coolant all over the engine. See picture below.
Is there some way to gap / lift the rear mount on the crossmember by the tranny? What's the best way to get her sitting level again?
Engine mounts are seated all the way. Took some wrestling to get them both in, but they seemed pretty seated. I'll try to get a picture of them. Here's an old picture of the tranny mount is circled in red. Ignore the yellow circle.
I ordered a replacement rear mount and will give it a shot. I'm hoping I don't have to add any kind of shim! Doesn't strike me as safe, but I'm pretty new to this game.
I ordered motor mounts from RockAuto for my 1978 f100 with 300 six and what they sent was a set for an 80's 300 which are thicker than for the earlier 300's. Had to source them from a local parts place.
I had the same issue when getting my motor mounts too. I also had to go local and put eyes on them. I want to say the ones that matched up were for a van. Napa had them.
To catch up... I put a new rear mount in, but it's about the same height as the last one. I had to shim between the mount and the housing for the rear of the transmission with a piece of rolled steel I had lying around. That was enough to get the front of the engine to sit low enough so the fan blade wasn't catching the radiator hose. I'll have to drive it about 30 minutes to get it home where I can replace the mounts with the newly order 2331 / 2332 mounts.
I made it about twenty minutes down the road without any overheating problems, but I got to a stop light and it overheated and quit on me right there.
I bled the system pretty well, but I haven't installed a return reservoir tank yet.
I flushed the radiator and it was clean.
I installed a new thermostat that appears to be working correctly.
Fan blades are not obstructed and look like they're oriented correctly.
I got a little belt squeal before I bled the system, but that seems to have been a one-time thing and seems firm enough.
Upper and lower rad hoses are warm to the touch after running for a while.
The water pump is the original 1978 water pump.
I'm guessing that the water pump is kaput? I'm out of ideas.
