Hi guys,
I’m planning to post a thread here of our full build as it is a good story and a tribute to the guys and gals here because without you all, we truly could not have done it. My dad and I knew nothing about diesel but knew how to turn a wrench. Special thanks to Jarret and Hitman....
Here’s a pic of phase 2 nearing completion!
So to my main question. What should I expect for fuel mileage? The motor went through a full reseal, T500, efuel, new injector orings, every deal you can think of, s300, 1.0 housing, uppies etc.
So she’s tight up top and we haven’t gone into any more power yet.
The most I've gotten out of my cclb, srw, 2wd, auto, 3.55 ,285-75-16 and 305-55-20's with 160/0, was 17MPG doing 65mph 15-16 average. Towing 9- 12max. I dont know how the hell you 4x4 guys get those high MPG's.
I call these threads 'the lie threads!' lol I get 6 to 9 towing and 13 empty. Head winds and hills I've seen 5.7. I tell people I pull 18K but it doesn't register in their minds. Tongue weight alone is 4,500. When they made these pickups over 20 years ago I don't think they had this in mind. I'll get on a Cat scale one of these days, I keep putting it off because in the back of my mind I don't really want to know.
My truck is all stock besides an AFE big boost filter and the resinator deleted from the exhaust. I have a 5spd with 4.10 rear. Towing my 5er which the sticker states the GVW max rating is 11,800 lbs. I am sure I am there with all the cargo loaded in it. Plus I am carrying 58 gallons of fuel between front and rear fuel tanks, and a tool box in the bed with at least 100lbs if not more worth of tools.
Hand calculated towing the 5er I have gotton as low as 10 mpg and the highest on a long trip was 11.5 mpg
Empty I average 15-16 with the highest at 18 mpg and that was driving on all flat ground with longer trips and keeping it at 55 mph or below.
Just to let everyone know what is possible.
Best is 22 mpg to 24 mpg on flat going 65mph.
14 mpg to 16 mpg with a pickup camper.
Headwinds make a big difference with the camper.
1997 F250 CC 4x4 Auto with 400k miles.
All the normal deletes and tricks on motor.
I'm always amazed at the lower numbers others get.
Good luck., Bob
You boys are doing better than me. I'm getting average 14mpg city driving with a 96 F250 single cab, long bed, 6" lift + 33" Nitto Graps, ZF5 + 6-position switch (i drive on the 3rd position, +50 HP/+90 ft-lbs).
I have a crew cab long bed dually with a 5 speed and 4.10s. Its got stock 235/85 tires and a 5" staight pipe with a hydra. It was getting 17 mpg with at least one iffy injector, until it bent some pushrods and blew up a lifter.
