I'm hoping this will help others with this problem. I'm glad I can offer something for all the help I've found here.
It wasn't very difficult at all. The hardest part was getting radio out of the dash so I could pull the dash bezel off.

I've got a stable of Fords so I keep one of the removal tools in the Excursion's console. Prices range from under $6 at Walmart to about $20 at Auto Zone. A mechanic friend swears that he can remove the radio with a coat hanger, but I find that $6 is cheaper than the aggravation of not quite getting the radio out with a bend coat hanger.
