This. It will hop a little if you're unloaded and try to turn and won't turn well at all if it has any weight in the rear trying to drive around with the diff locked. I've done both.
Even turning on dry pavement at low speeds in 4HI probably won't hurt anything. It will bind or hop if empty, will probably just stop if loaded. At that point, who ever is behind the wheel is bound to think "hmmmm, something's not right here" and stop rather than punch it.
