Rear Engine Seal Replacement Without Special Tools?
Hello, I am replacing my transmission for my 2002 F150 4.6L with 250K miles, and since I am going that far, I thought I should replace the rear engine seal. The service manual calls for special tools to remove and replace the slinger and seal. Anyone do this without the special tools? Thanks.
You can install the seal without the tools just be careful to get it in square and not roll the lip over. The slinger is a little more difficult because its very thin. The tool supports it during installation. I have left them off before with no problems. Their only purpose is to keep dirt out of the seal. You should also reseal the plate to the block. Those actually leak more often than the seal does.

Thank you.
I pulled the trans this morning, and the rear seal is dry, so maybe I won't even bother changing it, or just get the slinger tool. That's about $50. The seal tool is $170. Rather not spend it if I don't have to. I have read other posts where people leave them off too.
And removing the slinger and seal should not require any special tools? I should just be able to pull them out?
