Cold air intake

I have a 2017 F 150 lariat 4wd crew cab long wheel base with max tow and 3.5 eco. When towing my horse trailer or camper (less than 7k lbs) over the passes in Colorado where I live, it gets hot and cuts power down to nothing. My wife’s 2019 expedition max with same 3.5 eco boost does just fine with same trailers. Would a cold air intake help keep it cooler when under load? Or is it just throwing money out the window? Thanks for the info!

No, CAI won’t do anything. Those are a waste of money. Something else seems wrong if you’re seeing a big difference between those two rigs. I imagine the Expedition is even heavier.

Follow your stock air intake system and note it is already outside the engine compartment.

My 2.7 does not feel like it's affected by temperature or altitude, but that's unloaded. Are you having overheating problems as well?

If everything is clear and clean and nothing is causing blocked flow over or in the intercooler, you could install a larger intercooler.

Several others available as well. No free lunch there.

I figured that would be the answer. I’ll take a look and see if there are any blockages. Yes the expedition should be heavier and has the same engine and tranny. Less drag though I would guess because the high roof goes right back to the trailers unlike the pick up.

If the Expedition is a Platinum is has a more powerful tune, 400 hp and 480 ft lbs of torque. What are the axle ratios?

It’s an XLT with max tow as well.

I was thinking that might be the issue. The SUV body could be helping break the air against the trailer.

Has it always acted this way when towing or is this recent?

Have the dealer check the radiator. Could be a known issue.

What gets hot? Coolant temperature? What octane fuel are you using? Our 2015 does not experience this issue, but we do use premium when we're towing; especially when we are at high altitude.

I used premium fuel this time to see if that was the issue. I need to take it in for service soon so I will have them check the radiator. I still have warranty and it is getting worse. The bumper pull trailer is newer to me. I had been pulling a 4 horse gooseneck that’s a big trailer and not having the issue. That leads me to believe either its just a big drag issue that I don’t experience with the gooseneck, or it is a new thing that needs to be fixed. When it gets to 250 it shuts down and won’t shift until it cools down to about 240.

I think there is something wrong with your cooling or something. The 3.5EB is a pretty stout towing engine for a half ton truck. We have not run into a situation where ours will overheat.

Take it back to the dealer and have the input and output temperature checked. A bad batch of radiators were put in trucks. Something about casting material clogging up part of the radiator.

Yeah definitely get it looked at. This is the first one I've heard of that does this. Extra nice that you have an Expedition to compare to with the same route and load. That really helps the keyboard diagnostics.

. . . and another thought: the extra aerodynamic drag (versus the Expedition) is minuscule in the big picture.
