Hey guys I have a 2008 F350 that’s deleted With 181k on this truck. I was driving home few days ago and I was on a hill at a red light when the truck died and would not restart. So I had it towed back to my friends shop and when we took it off the flat bed it started up and ran good but the next day I drove maybe 20 miles and it died again now it will start after 20 mins but dies right out like I out of Diesel but I have a 1/2 tank I changed the fuel filter on top and the bowl was very low on fuel and the bottom filter is empty I really need help guys

No engine light but there is a stored code P2291 today I did bleed some air out the system from when I put new filter in and it started and runs but i don’t think that’s why it keeps dying When I drive it

Just because it's out there.

P2291 Code Definition

Injector Control Pressure Too Low - Engine Cranking

What the P2291 code means

This trouble code will only be found on diesel powered vehicles. It indicates that the injector control pressure for the high pressure oil has fallen below the threshold of acceptance set by the manufacturer during the cranking of the engine.

What are the causes of the P2291 code?

Some potential causes of this trouble code would include:
  • Lack of maintenance resulting in low oil pressure
  • Engine oil leaks causing low oil pressure
  • A faulty injector pressure control sensor
  • A faulty oil injector control regulator
  • Damaged wiring or connectors that are associated with this system.
  • A faulty powertrain control module

What are the symptoms of the P2291 code?

Symptoms of this trouble code that the driver may experience would include:
  • A Check Engine Light may be illuminated
  • If the engine runs with this code stored for an extended period of time, severe engine damage may also be a symptom associated with this trouble code

How does a mechanic diagnose the P2291 code?

A mechanic may begin to diagnose this trouble code by first checking the oil level and condition. If the oil level is low or extremely dirty, this issue may have been caused by that. If the oil seems to be okay, the mechanic would then test the injector pressure control sensor and the oil injector control regulator for proper function using the manufacturer’s recommended procedure. During these tests, the mechanic would also ensure that all the wiring and connectors associated with this system are in good working condition. Finally, the mechanic would test the powertrain control module and relay their findings over to the customer to help make a repair decision.

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P2291 code

A common mistake that could be made when diagnosing this trouble code would be assuming that is not a big deal, and driving the vehicle with the code stored for a period of time. This is not a code that can be put on the back burner as it can cause serious engine damage.

How serious is the P2291 code?

This code would be considered very serious as it can cause major engine damage if stored in the powertrain control module for an extended period of time. It is not a good idea to drive a vehicle with this trouble code stored other than to drive it to a place to get this issue resolved.

What repairs can fix the P2291 code?

Repairs that could potentially resolve this issue would be:
  • Changing the engine oil
  • Repairing an oil leak
  • Replacing the injector pressure control sensor
  • Replacing the oil injector control regulator
  • Repairing or replacing wiring or connectors that are associated with this system
  • Replacing the powertrain control module

Additional comments regarding the P2291 code

Keeping up on basic vehicle maintenance can help to prevent trouble codes such as this one. Each manufacturer of diesel engines will specify an oil change interval that should be strictly followed. This information can be found in your owner’s manual. The typical diesel interval is between five and ten thousand miles.

Could that code be because it would not start just kept cranking???

You can clear the code and see what codes flag. Yes that would mean your High pressure fuel system might be suspect. They crank till the start or a few seconds more. Regardless if your spinning the key.
