Camper Special extended tailpipe

Next week I will be installing headers and having the exhaust done by a local shop. I'd like to be close to what would have been original (yes I know headers/dual exhaust was not offered). I know from reading past threads that the extended tailpipe on the CS went past the rear axle and stopped short of the bumper. I'm interested in seeing how it avoids the spare tire, and where in relation to the bumper it stops etc. Can anyone post a photo of a stock exhaust with extended tailpipe?

Tony

Here's a picture taken on New Years Day 1974 - 45 years ago. Truck is a 1965 F250 Camper Special that belonged to a friend of my Dads. That's Dad getting suited up to go skiing. Water skiing. Truck is only 8 years old in this picture. He thinks the exhaust system was still original at this point. You can maybe see the tip of the tailpipe where it is exiting out the right side behind the rear tire.

Cool old photo. Was that a New Years day tradition to go water skiing in what I'd have to assume was some pretty cold water.

Cool photo Chad, and thanks.

I can see the exhaust in the photo and have seen others like it. Here's where my confusion comes from (these are from an old thread)

No Ford truck had a curved tailpipe that exited out the right side behind the rear wheel, as is shown in post 1. It won't be too long before sooty exhaust appears on the paint job!

1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog / Illustration Section 52, Page 20. Take a look-see at how the tailpipe is routed.

Camper Specials came with an extended tailpipe as part of the package. Extended in a straight line almost to where the rear bumper was located (if so equipped)..

This diagram (from same thread) sort of jives with what ND states above, yet would seem to have to go thru the spare tire.

It actually was. Every year on New Years Day they would go skiing at Lake Tapps. My Dad and the buddy helping him were regulars and sometimes others would take the plunge.

If a person on the shore in that first picture turned 180 degrees and took a picture this would be the view. In this picture I'm in the stern of the boat in the middle. Short guy with dark cap on. You might be able to see some of the snow on the far banks. This particular lake is fed by runoff from Mt. Rainier so it's this extra cold somewhat milky water. And a man made lake to boot so there are stumps in many many places. Still are to this day.

I take it you don't have a copy of the MPC, then? Something is missing from that drawing. Just to the bottom left where you can see the "USE 5A231" is the legend for those two characters preceeding the 5255. The small dot and the triangle. You see those? I'll let ND take it from there.

I have read ND saying they never made a 1964 Camper Special, too. Why the different outlet pipe on lines 2 and 4 then?

This '66 appears fairly new (@ time of photo), and tailpipe is same as what you've posted. I have others as well that show same. My thoughts are that this is as original, but??

***edit: hmm, based on fender badges, maybe not a '66, and not so original

Looks like a '66 to me.

F100/250 Camper Special introduced in 1965.

Pic below is the only one there is. Same pic as in post #6

Looks like this would not work with spare tire under the bed which I plan on keeping. Not a bad price though. My local guy quoted me $350 for complete dual install from headers back. He's providing collectors, crossovers etc, and will reuse my flowmasters as they are fairly new. I think my plan is to have exit right side as shown in photos, and perhaps stop short somewhere on left as to appear original. I'll let him work out the specifics on that.

It does work with the spare. I believe Ibuzzard has the same one. I just never carry a spare. 20yrs of 10 ply BFG's and never had a problem that I couldn't fix with a plug kit and a mini air compressor.
