1965 F100 spare tire interferance

New problem (always something) that I hope someone can help me with.

I gave the muffler shop the diagram of the stock layout for my 1965 F100 but now there does not seem to be enough room to hang the spare tire.

Any ideas for anyone?

Maybe that is why my muffler exits the side just behind the rear door passenger side instead of the rear as was stock. It was changed during the build into a CrewCab by a coachhouse. By the way, since the muffler is further up front, it heats up the floor for the rear passengers quite a bit. I remember as a kid how hot it got during the summer camping trips.

65 You assumed that because you gave them something to follow, they actually did.

My advise, before going to the muffler shop have spare tires & hitches already installed. Then they have to work with what's there. Now you have to work around what they installed.

The only 1965/66's that had an extended tailpipe were F100/250 Camper Specials, extended straight out. The tailpipe on other 1965/66's ended just past the rear axle.

No Ford truck had a curved tailpipe that exited out the right side behind the rear wheel, as is shown in post 1. It won't be too long before sooty exhaust appears on the paint job!

1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog / Illustration Section 52, Page 20. Take a look-see at how the tailpipe is routed.

It can be done. I did what John said and mounted my receiver and underbed spare and then took it to the muffler shop. There isn't a lot of room left over with the spare under the bed. Here are a few pics. I wish the underside of my truck was as clean as yours.

Can someone post the muffler layout

66f100 - Is your muffler a stock one? Did they curve downward like that?

Numbersdummy - Can you post the layout you are talking about. I thought the way mind was done did follow the parts catalog layout

Thanks.

Absolutely not. FoMoCo would not have a curved tailpipe extending out the passenger side below sheet metal that would soon be coated by sooty exhaust.
Sorry no, cannot. Don't know how to scan and post parts catalog pics, and I don't wanna know, because I'm beseiged enough as it is.

FTE member Old Harley has the CD catalog, can scan and post pics from it. I think Boss9F100 has this same CD version.

I bought a 1965 F100 352 brand new, owned the pile until 2009, so I know how the tailpipe was routed. Routed over the rear axle, then ended about a foot away from the axle in a straight line.

Camper Specials came with an extended tailpipe as part of the package. Extended in a straight line almost to where the rear bumper was located (if so equipped).

IMO, the first thing peeps should buy is the parts catalog (available from hipoparts.com for 22 bucks). Since EVERY part is illustrated, the catalog can also be used as an assembly/disassembly manual.

And, btw: No Ford truck came with dual exhausts until the Lightning model was introduced in the late 1990's.

The original exhaust was long gone when I got the truck. It had headers and pipes that stuck out in front of the rear wheels. I took it to the muffler shop and described what I wanted to them. They said "oh you want it high and tucked then". I wasn't exactly sure what they meant but they showed me bumpside truck that they had done the same way and I told them that was exactly what I wanted. I am happy with the way it turned out. I am running turbo mufflers and they sound nice.

Most of the illustration was already in one of my albums so here goes:

ND, I would be glad to show you how to post these since I don't always see the requests. (As I recall you no longer have your CD, though, lent it to some ne'er-do-well I think)

"She who must be obeyed" knows how to do it, and has done it for me a coupla times when I received several requests from gun nuts to send them images from a Winchester Model 1895 parts diagram.

But, "She" is a Corrosion engineer, and some peeps are aware that an answer to a simple question by an engineer might entail a 40 paragraph answer.

And that's the situation I'm in. When "She" went through the process, the way she explained it was so damn confusing, I said "forget it!"

Seeing it this way explains a few things to me. First, I know an exhaust that ends under the axle will make a real black mess over time. Been there, done that. So I have seen many of our trucks with the exhaust tip ending right where the first picture above has it. Mine did when I bought it and had been there for years. No black soot on the paint. Key, was extending it out enough. Mine, is currently like the picture up top with a stainless extension out a few inches, I had the spare in when it was done also. I prefer this way as I don't want to go under the truck a second time to clean it.

Yes it does. Note that little section of exhaust pipe just below the arrow pointing at the rear of the muffler. I would say it is before the axle.
