Here's what I do every time, especially if a transmission may have worn bearings that can cause the clutch disk to wallow on the flywheel.

1) Be sure to pull the trans straight out. Only when the input shaft is free of the throwout bearing should you allow the angle to change or to start lowering the transmission.
2) make locating marks with a center punch on the clutch pressure plate and flywheel for reinstallation.
3) remove the pressure plate from the flywheel. Inspect the face of the pressure plate and the clutch disc for wear.
4) inspect the flywheel for wear.
5) if worn, replace the clutch and pressure plate with a Long-style clutch (Precision clutches from Jegs are good and priced right.
6) if worn unevenly, remove the flywheel and have resurfaced. Also inspect the flywheel ring gear for broken or badly damaged teeth. Replace if so.
7) Replace the throwout bearing (comes with the clutch kit).
8) Replace the pilot bushing (comes with the clutch kit) in the tail of the crankshaft. This centers and supports the transmission input shaft.
9) When reinstalliing, angle the transmission correctly and slide in straight, turning the input shaft splines to line up with the clutch splines.
10) DO NOT start tightening the trans-to-bell bolts if the trans face fails to seat completely on the bell face. You'll snap the cast iron trans ears trying to force it to seat.
11) Hook up the shift linkage and adjust so that the trans is in perfect neutral when the shifter is in perfect neutral.
12) Use the specified trans grease called for by Ford. I use 90W non-detergent in these transmissions, myself. Available at Tractor Supply.

Hope this helps. Have fun!

Trans swap is complete. Everything seems to be working well. I am taking her for a little longer drive tonight and see how she does.

[QUOTE=farmallmta;18891852]The price quoted is fair and commensurate with standard industry pricing. That much said, you'll do well to learn how to rebuild your own manual transmissions. The first one is maddening, while the second one is only frustrating. The third one and all others after will be easy as can be and a real pleasure.

But at about halfway through the first one, you'll be kicking yourself and saying, "at $595 I'm working for way less than minimum wage!"[/

I'm reading this while taking a break about halfway through my first manual transmission rebuild and laughing my bu8tt off. The snap-on truck stopped by the shop and asked me if I needed anything. I should have asked for ALL the snap ring pliers!

Yeah, the BIG ones! Luckily during my first rebuild the local parts store had those nice big flat-nose snap-ring pliers that come in really handy getting those big boys spread open.

Good luck. And don't leave out any detent ***** or springs!

LOL, been there. But just think. After you finally get it done right, installed and have a like new transmission taking care of business, you'll find yourself feeling so awesome that you'll amble up to a bunch of outlaw bikers lounging on their Harleys in front of a sleazy beer joint, flick the nose of one of them and say, "yeah, you big pnssy, but can you rebuild a Ford Toploader? Right. I thought not. Get the heck out of here!"

Below, that one right there in the middle will be the one who gets his nose flicked by the Toploader Whisperer:

#$#^%& Detent springs

So turns out I did not find all the parts that fell on the floor.
I am missing a detent ball and one of the springs was broken. The set screw was never there, and possibly the one detent ball, at that point of the reassembly it was late and I just wanted to get it together. Lo0ng story short, it still falls out of second and needs to come back out. What would be a good source for the detent parts?
