So I have gone down the path of upgrading the rear end. Detroit Trutrac and 4.56 gears. The shop I am using is having a heck of a time getting the gears quiet. First set of Yukons was set up two different ways. Standard and something about a different type of pinon bearing. Noise both ways. Fast forward to two other sets, different brands. Last one was a higher quality harder set of which made more noise. Now shop is saying something is bent in the housing. 4 degrees off or something . He also states that pinion depth for a good pattern is a good measure off from where he normally sets it. He wants to now put the first set in a second housing and if normal specs are achieved on the bench he want to swap the rear ends to a cost of about $400 to me on top of the original agreement.
I had no noise with all the oem equipment. Can anyone give me any feedback on this? Is this normal for 4.56 gears?
Sorry, I did forget to describe the noise. Is a little bit of howling/whine at speed, “floating” when trying to say hold 45mph. Not really on or off the gas. Noise does go away on accel or decel.
It sounds like pinion depth or backlash is out of whack. Since you said the mechanic mentioned pinion depth was off I'm sure that's the problem or part of it. Which way is the depth off? Too far from the ring gear or too close? I know with the sterling 10.5 stock uses a crush sleeve but some aftermarket gear sets the pinion has a shorter shoulder intended to just use shims.
How experienced is the guy setting up the gears? That's a huge factor when it comes to getting a quiet set of gears, I doubt it's the housing or the gears.

Fairly large shop. I asked and they are well versed in 10.5s. As far as piñon depth, I want to say it was like something 15 thou vs 30 thou difference? He is using crush sleeves.
All new bearings. Pretty Mitch complete rebuild. I’d also think a bearing noise would be consistent across all speeds.
Not necessarily. I had a jeep that had a bad carrier bearing and it only started to howl at 45 mph and up-grsnted it was not a new bearing. The odds of s bearing bad out of the box is probably pretty low but it would be worth asking.
When I had the TT put in mine, I asked about new gears and was told that if the OEM ones are good, use them. New aftermarket gears would not be a good decision and would make noise. Mine is absolutely silent since then.
Noise at floating tells me its a bad bearing. Maybe wrong fluid or too much? Banks did a study on those diff covers that add capacity and initially said it may be a bad choice. Not sure if you have one or not.
I had them put the aluminum ford diff cover from the 07+ on. Not too much added capacity I think. Hopefully today I’ll see if the original 4.56 gears setup better in a new housing.
