I thought it was a 8mm nut. Truck is looking good Ron. I’m definitely gonna be following your thread
You found me Sir!
Well 8mm May certainly work, but I know that's not what I used last time, because we don't have any metric hardware at my work, lol. It may very well have been 5/16 I used though, which is extremely close to a 8mm.
Sending unit should be here today. I called discount tire and they have to order the tires. 3-5 business days, ugh. I'll call some other places today. They don't make the original Firestone's anymore. Thinking about going with Goodyear eagles at $130 each. Options are limited in a 275/60r17. Don't want to spend a ton, because they will probably dry rot before they are worn out.
Of course I found you. I know what you are capable of and wanna see this truck brought back to life. Besides, who else is gonna be here to try and convince you to put a solid front axle and transfer case in that Lightning?! When those trucks first came out, I wanted one soooo bad. Not a lot of the older ones left on the road.
Funny you mention that. There was actually one running around my area for years that was SAS. Truck was a little rough, with a miscolored door and fender. Haven't seen it in a long time though.
I had also been gathering parts for my old 94 long bed. I had a 79 frame with running gears and a fresh built e40d with cross member and drive shaft. Had every intention of sas swapping that truck before I ended up buying the superduty.
Not a chance in hell of that happening to this truck though, lol. But the old flowmasters off that 79 chassis are on this lightning.
Front tank is back in and everything is working. Still have to drop the rear tank. It's a little down on power, probably from the antique gas. But it still had enough power for a couple nice sets of black marks. Sitting here at the tire shop getting tires put on it now. Went with the odd ball OE size of 275/60r17 in the Goodyear eagle rs-a. It's a shame, the tires that were on it are just the second set the trucks had. They were the original Firestone's that they don't make anymore, and had tons of tread left. They were good looking tires, but unfortunately had some major dry rotting going on.
You are going to give your kid a collectors truck as a first vehicle?
Nope, not what I said at all. I said "when he graduates". Which will put him at 18 and nearly 2 years of driving experience. I also said if he keeps a clean driving record. Whether he is 18 and graduating high school, or 22 and graduating college, or 42 when he gets it, I'll give it to him when I feel the time is appropriate. Regardless, this truck will be his one day. I bought it with that intention, my father n law wants that, and my wife, whom learned to drive with this truck, wants that. He loves vehicles and going to car shows. I'm hoping that's what he will use this for, and it will not be a daily driver.
