So on that one chip, I can have it programmed with an 87 octane program ONLY? Am I reading that right? Because the multi-program chip would be over $300 and that is nuts. If I'm reading correctly on the first chip, a single 87 octane program is all I'd want anyway.
I have a 1996 Explorer with a 4.0L V-6 and a 4 speed automatic transmission (160 horsepower).
I recently purchased a 19 ft. trailer (3,500 lbs.) and even though I am well within the rated tow capacity (5,000 lbs.) I feel that I could use some extra performance (horsepower) especially when towing up California hills and mountains.

[B]I am a newbee and this is somewhat confusing.
1) What is the stock program? Is it different than the factory "stock" program.
Its what's in the vehicle now.
2) Isn't the stock program for 87 octane?
Anything you do now, doesn't change with the stock setting on the chip.
3) What program is recommended for towing with 87 octane?
I don't recommend an 87 octane program. It will only reprogram the shift firmness and shift points with minimal power gain. You need a premium fuel performance tune to get a gain for towing.
4) What program is recommended for towing with 91 octane?
Not sure what you mean? We target 91 octane by default when programming a performance tune for California.
5) I rarely see 93 octane in California so should I order the chip for 91 octane instead of 93 octane?
I still have one question which is similar to the one posted by WXboy so I think that I am not alone in being confused by this issue.
In you reply you state "I don't recommend an 87 octane program".
Does that mean that if I purchase a chip for towing running 91 octane, you don't recommend that I purchase it with the 87 octane program which I would run when I was not towing and not using premium fuel?
I don't recommend an 87 octane only chip. The only major benefit will be the transmission. If you get a 3 stage chip (stock/87/premium) because your driving needs change then it would make sense to get it.
