i bought a 1990 xlt lariat about 3 months ago. the strange thing i noticed, after a few days, is that the doors wont stay open. i bought it from the original owner. lucky for me i have a friend that has a 93 and i checked to see what kept his doors open. his has a metal plate bolted to the door hindge that the roller on the door part rubs against. mine doesnt have the plate, it has the spring loaded roller but no plate on the chassis side of the hindge. i cant see where the paint has been chipped, as i guess it would be if someone would of removed them. i figure i can get some off a truck or bronco in the wrecking yard. my concern is, do i have to loosen all three hindge bolts to install these plates, if so im concerned with screwing up the fit on the door. right now it closes and opens perfect, or do i just need to loosen one bolt to install them. plus has anyone elese come across this, cant think of why somebody would do this, unless they didnt want there doors held open, no matter what.
i had a 89' ford crown vic and now i have 90' f350 both vehicles were missing this part.look at it up close, its not been removed it is broken off.usually drivers side cuz its used most. just one of those ford thangs. steve
On my '87 Ford f-150, they broke off. I'm pretty sure you could find them in the junk yard. You could even practice taking the doors off in the junk yard, so when it came time to do your door it would be a snap.
Yeah, they break off. I just saw that the other night replacing a hinge pin.
Just take a Sharpie marker and draw the outline of the door hinge flange where it meets the a-pillar (body) of the truck. It's not very hard at all to get it back in the right place.
Don't forget to pull the trim off to the left of the floorpan (assuming driver's side) and unclip the wire harnesses that go to the door.
mine broke too(drivers side) guess the weld was not meant to stand up to such use for 200k plus miles? ford engineers musta been pessimistic that year...
