The Wrench Warning Light

My girlfriend has a 2011 Ford F-150 with the 3.7 v6. It does have I over 210,000 miles on it , but she has owned it since it was new and the miles are all hwy miles back and forth from work. It has been well maintained.

Sunday she was driving and the wrench icon came on. She managed to drive about 70 miles to get it home.

This group and it's members have always been a priceless asset to me. So, before I search the net until I am "nuts". What are some of the of problems that could cause the wrench light to come on? And is it ok to drive the truck with the wrench light on? We have parked it and she is using my spare Ford

I would also like to have enough information before I take it to someone to work on it.

Any info or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

brc

A bazillion things can cause this. Scan for codes and tell us what they are.

I used my ob2 scanner and it said no codes detected. I don't know if my scanner is out of date or just not the correct one to diagnose this problem.

However I used it on my Dad's 2014 Ram Hemi and it pulled codes on it.

Thanks for the reply

So I drive the truck to autozone and orielly's. Autozone tried to scan it but it would it scan. The guy said it would not likely pick up any codes and it didn't. The person at orielly's explained it a little clearer. He said the wrench light was basically a maintenance light and it would take something like a dealership computer to pull up the codes.

Is there any common things that can cause the light to come on that I can check before I take to a shop with a computer?

thanks

I have not had this happen with my 150 but it did with my wife's 2008 Edge. The problem ended up being one of the rear wheel sensors was dropping out and setting the wrench light. The garage replaced the sensor and no issues since.

EDIT: I think that the ABS light was also on at the end but the wrench light did come on first.

If there's a wrench light and a separate check engine light then the wrench is just an emissions maintenance reminder light that is trigger at something like every 30K miles. If your reader has a clear codes reset feature then you should be able to use that to turn it off.

I just came back from a local repair shop. The guy hooked his computer up and it came back with code U210B which is the fuel pump control module.

So, I guess I need to change the module that is mounted on the crossbar located by the spare tire.

Before I do this I would greatly appreciate any comments to make sure I am headed in the right direction.

Also, I drove the truck today and it runs great. No problems what so ever. But I want to fix the problem.

Thanks

The FPDM is easy to change, inspect the connector well for corrosion. Strongly suggest you purchase it from Ford and not use any aftermarket. Also inspect relay 27 under the hood for burns. You need a code reader that is capable of CAN Bus protocol to pull codes effectively on the newer vehicles.

The guy had a large code reader. It almost looked like a tablet. He could change the settings on the info screen in the truck using his code reader. He said he tried to clear the Wrench icon. But it would pop back up. So he pulled that code.

I took the fuel pump relay module off early. It was pretty easy. I checked the connections. The module was plastic and intact. I took it off and it was a little wet inside the module and the wiring harness I unhooked from it. It had to be condensation because it hasn't rained in over two weeks where I am at.

I dried out the module where the prongs are located and the wiring harness. I reinstalled everything, but the wrench light did not go off. I took the part off and I am going to get a new one tomorrow.

I checked fuse 27 and it did not have any burn marks on it. If I install the new module and the light does not go off. Do you have to reset it with a code reader? Or is the light supposed to go off on its on?

Also if replacing the fuel pump module does not work. What else could it be?

Sorry for so many questions 😊.

I replaced the fuel pump module (fuel pump driver motor) this morning. Cranked the truck up and the wrench light went off. I just took it on a test drive and the light remains off.

Just wanted to thank everyone and this awesome forum for always helping me out.

Thanks
