Unlocking one front hub

I tried a little experiment today. I unlocked one front hub thinking that the spider gears would Spin and the transfer case would not. But I could hear the transfer case whining as I accelerated up through the gears. So I went back out and unlock the other front Hub, and the whining was gone. So it would appear that there's enough resistance to the differential differentiating that the front drive shaft will spin with just one Hub locked. FYI

Good info, but it seems to me like a bad idea to drive with only one hub locked. Yeah there's enough resistance in the gears that it still turns the unlocked axle shaft and driveshaft, but the spider gears are still turning pretty fast. At higher road speeds, your spider gears would potentially be turning way faster than they ever were intended to thereby creating unnecessary heat and potential wear on the spider gears and needle bearings.

I think it would be double speed. Good point. I abandoned my idea except for around the ranch low speed.
