I have read the sticky threads that the wonderful Sous organized. Thanks to the contributors for all the info listed. I understand the flushing information. I have a 2000 so should have the removable plug to access the torque convertor if I do read correctly. So if that is the case, and I can drain the convertor, how does it refill? Just trying to understand how this works.
The filter is attached via nipple and oring seal to the pump. So, the pump sucks from the pan, through the filter, and it goes where is goes from there.
I haven't had any issues until today. I went to drive the truck and it wouldn't engage forward or reverse. It did finally start slowly trying to move. Shut it off and restarted. Moved like nothing wrong. Then it started doing the same thing. The fluid appears full but not red like it should be. I have a temp gauge and never run it hot and don't abuse the truck.
So I just went out and drained the fluid from the pan. My pan does have a drain plug. Fluid was very very dark. Looked like motor oil almost. I tried to locate the plug on the bell housing to access the torque convertor but didn't see one. I read somewhere it should seeings it is a 2000 model. Any thoughts? @Mark Kovalsky Is this fluid a bad sign?
This just started and I have never had any issues before. Fluid simply too far gone to perform? I know you usually ask for codes but right at this moment that's not an option. So just trying to get a feel for possibilities. I am no transmission guru and don't play one on tv. And is it a bad thing to not drain the convertor and do the complete flush? Again, just trying to wrap my head around a transmission and how it all functions. Thanks everyone.
There isn't a plug on the bell housing. There is a sheet metal cover over the front opening of the bell housing. The torque converter and it's drain plug are under this cover.
Dark fluid certainly isn't a good sign, but it doesn't necessarily mean the trans is finished.
Just to close the loop on this one. THANK YOU MARK KOVALSKY!!! @Mark Kovalsky Your flush method did the trick for me. A word of advice for others, if you plan to use Super Tech Mercon V plan to make trips to different Walmart stores. I went to 4 stores to finally find enough. I completed the flush this morning and everything so far has turned out fine. Seems to even shift smoother.
Glad it worked out for you. Transmission is kinda the 'brain' of the truck, and stock the 4r100 has a bad rep behind the 7.3.
Transmission fluid has ALOT of jobs, I choose to pamper mine. Waiting until fluid is dark to change it is unwise IMHO.
I've been towing 10-17k# for the past ten years, I change fluid every 30k, even though it still looks good. Think of it as preventative maintenance, like an oil change.

I have a different tale.
I pulled the 4R100 from my 2001 to install it in a '96. I then bought a 4R100 from Dieselsite, probably in '05. I have changed the trans fluid exactly one time the 230k miles I have put on the Dieselsite trans.
Well I am back. Not sure what is happening. Today I stopped at the pumpkin patch to grab 2 bales of hay. Left the truck running and in park.Got back in and put in reverse. Rev but barely moved. Went to drive, same result. Back to reverse and slowly went backwards. Back to drive and revved but slowly moved forward. Finally seemed to decide to move. No strange noises or anything. Get on the road to try and make it home. The rpms fluctuated for a few hundred feet and then it acts like nothings wrong. I do have a temp gauge and it never got over 190, actually a little under. Get home. Put in park on level ground. Check fluid. Fluid is a nice red and in the operating range for H. I am at a loss. So that's my follow up update.
Might want to pull the pan and see if the filter neck is cracked or has the wrong filter. Newer pans take a deeper filter if i remember right and someone
might have put one on the truck and used the older filter.
Anything is possible, but I have had the truck since 2007 and it just started acting up when I started this thread. Never even felt a hiccup before then.
