I finally got to do the transmission fluid change in my van. While I was looking for information pertaining to the amount of fluid this transmission takes after draining the transmission and torque converter varies greatly. Every source I looked at says different things. I did catch 95 % of the fluid in a large tub and measured it in 5 gallons measuring bucket and what I got out was 13 quarts. I refilled the transmission with 4 gallons. After I drove the van for a while, I checked fluid level while idle and in the park and I can see that the fluid level is correct. It has been a few days now and I have already driven the van on the freeway without issues but I still wonder what is the average amount of fluid this van takes.
I would like to get your input on this so I make sure I did it correctly.
Owners manual says 15.7 quarts for my 96 E150's E4OD. Hard to tell most times with the ****ty dipstick Ford blessed it with. Best thing to do also is install a drain plug in the pan. Makes future changes a lot less messy.
I don't think there's a definite final ATF amount used after a full fluid exchange---the owner's manuals gives a number which should be considered the absolute least amount you'll need. When I did my own 4R70W it took just about 18 quarts to bring the pan's level up to the correct point on the dipstick. Once you've refilled to the suggested amount drive it for maybe 5 miles or so until its up to operating temperature then check fluid level--add if needed.
Typically if you're able to do the Mark K full flush method you do change the filter but that's the last time that's needed. He's said the filter is designed to last the life of the transmission which would be about 300K miles or more. (The full fluid flushes should happen about every 50-70K miles.) Since you don't change the filters again the drain plug isn't necessary BUT I always add one anyway---never know when or why the pan may need to be removed again in the future.
Thanks for your reply.
Since last year, I've been using an add-on cooler only and added a Raybestos inline filter. Without a trans temp gauge, I guess I'll need to make sure the filter is changed frequently.
After a 10,000 mile trip to Alaska, I'd like to open up the old filter to see how much metal is in there.
