Found another problem after I changed the starter. Did I mention that the starter died? Well these pipes that go to the Cat are rusted out. I'm guessing that they are for the smog pump? Anyway, I'm in Cali so odds are they'll have to be fixed before I can pass the emissions test, though I plan to try to w/o fixing it
Any ideas on where you'd get those pipes? I'll be checking the junk yards soon but as it's connected to the cat my guess is that they'll be mangled. May just end up buying a steel elbow to try to weld in... anyone good at welding rust?
very cool truck and really nice written :-) my 1988 IDI looked just as bad back then. Everything can be saved with a little time and a lot of love! keep it up! Greetings from Germany
Lol the rust looks like a plasma torch cut through the heat shield! IDK maybe the air pipe comes with a new cat? But, yeah I agree whatever you find in a rusthome (junk yard) is likely to be the same
The frame and hangers actually look pretty drn good!
it will be hard to weld to that rusted pipe for the air pump. Junkyard or ebay wil prolly be best bet since i dont think cali will accept it if it looks aftermarket

Yeah, I'm surprised at how NOT terrible the hangers are, I thought I was going to have to replace basically all of them which is no fun task.
California isn't quite as bad as folks think, the guy was going to run the test for me and if it passed it passed but he advised me to patch it up and come back.
I'm having a hard time finding the pipes I need that small but I'm sure i'll find em eventually. I already registered it as non-op so I'm not burning $ trying to get everything working again.
Truck was sitting for a while. Had a neighborhood kid over picking up brush around the yard in the truck when he came in to tell me the brakes went soft. Sure enough they went to the floor. In the never ending battle with the rust I managed to sheer off one of the bleed screws which was probably a blessing. Took the caliper off and drained it through the hydraulic port only to find some of the nastiest brake fluid I'd ever seen. This sludge was CHONKY! Anyway, rather than trying to restore these old things I opted to just buy a new set of calipers. Also managed to sheer off the steel brake line fitting between the rubber hose and MC, as I was already planning to replace the hoses. I've got new cylinders coming for the back too. Rotors and drums are expensive (probably just because they're so big) so those will likely just end up getting a cleaning.
How has it been running other than that? Might be worth just turning the stock drums and rotors(if parts stores still do that)?
It's started to hunt for idle and I'm guessing that has something to do with the vacuum system. The idle changes when you press the brakes haha.
I'm going to try to turn the rotors at work on our lathe just cause the parts store guys, even if they can and will turn your parts, I'm told they usually take em down to the minimum (or worse, just destroy em). And for all my years trying to get rotors and drums turned i've not once had a parts store actually do it. I've probably only tried it maybe 5-6 times but if you ever do want to get this done call first, know the specs on the parts, measure it yourself and THEN take it in. Otherwise you'll be wasting your time!
I've started looking around for a cab. Most places are asking close to half the cost of the truck for the cab and the other half of the cost I could get out of the cat! So I might end up doing that or just giving up on this ol truck.
Id guess that the brake booster diaphram tore when the pedal went to the floor....thus your vacuum leak
I worked for a parts store in HS(late 90's early 2000's) and I guess I still had my own perspective on the turning of drums/rotors. We did it right at our store, but I'm sure even then that was the exception. I remember having to turn away probably 50% of what was brought to me after I broke out the mic.

I'm hoping that's not the case but I wouldn't be surprised.
My guess is that one of the rear cylinders or calipers puked up all the fluid and now the MC is just full of air. The pedal still has a little brake just at the end of the stroke but the reservoir was almost empty. I haven't found the leak yet but the one caliper had a good 100ml or more of fluid in it while the other one was almost empty. I haven't been able to recreate the leak but I'm guessing that's just cause I'm pushing air around and can't actually create any pressure.
New calipers, pads and hoses installed. Going to do the rear wheel cylinders next. Brake fluid looked like mud. Also the axel vent was cut so likely it's full of water... WHEEEEEE
As predicted (by my brother) it was a rear wheel cylinder:
Cylinder was leaking the fluid out. It made a heck of a mess inside the drum but there was hardly any indication from the outside. I mean, now that I know I can tell but it was pretty sneaky.
